The saying “Big things come in small packages” applies to Mini, a trusted and premium automobile company known worldwide for their signature compact vehicles oozing with a bold presence on the road.
Manufactured in 1959 by the British Motor Corporation (BMC), the automobile company developed the Mini due to the request made by Leonard Lord, the head of BMC. He wanted an affordable “proper miniature car” efficient enough to carry four passengers. During that time, the Suez Crisis caused a shortage in the supply of petrol. Also, there was a great demand for german “bubble cars” which Mr. Lord disliked. With this, he required car designer Alec Issigonis to conceptualize an automobile with the following features: it must measure 10x4x4 feet, the space for the passengers must be six feet of the ten-foot length, and its engine must come from an existing unit for cost-effectiveness.
After a successful collaboration with talented people in the company, the Mark I Mini was unveiled. It was marketed in two main brands under the BMC, Austin and Morris until 1969.
Fast forward today and after several changes including BMW acquiring the brand in 2000, Mini is still a legendary vehicle maker that successfully introduced a model during a crisis. Their front-wheel-drive first offering is considered to be the most iconic car in British pop culture. It received various recognitions such as the second most influential car of the 20th century after the Ford Model T. A lot of car manufacturers pay homage to its distinct design by releasing their versions such as the Fiat 127, the Nissan Cherry, and the Honda N360.
In 2019, To celebrate its 60 years of glorious reign in the Philippines, a fun-filled event was held to launch the Mini 60 years limited edition model. Only 12 units were offered locally. The green painted, Mini Cooper S-based model is designed with black stripes and is powered by a 2.0-liter engine that produces 192 hp and a torque of 280 Nm.
