The Hyundai Kona is yet another entry into the sea of sub-compact crossovers taking the local market by storm. It has proven to be one of Hyundai Philippines’ best selling vehicles and features a funky and youthful vibe that the segment badly needs.

The formula comes simple for the Hyundai Kona, offers a cheerful alternative to the segment, gives it a capable yet efficient engine and price it at the point that competitively matches the others in its segment. Is the Hyundai Kona your next car?

The Hyundai Kona has proven to be a big hit for Hyundai Philippines

The exterior of the Hyundai Kona can only be described as fashionable yet unique at the same time.

What is essentially sub-compact cars with a raised ride height, sub-compact crossovers have learned to embrace the fact that one of the primary reasons they are so popular is the ability to have a more commanding view of the road, to become something closer to a small SUV.

Being such the Hyundai Kona is clad by black, polyurethane cladding around the wheel arches. This evokes a sense of ruggedness for casual on-lookers and this 2-tone look creates a unique aesthetic for the Kona.

The Hyundai Kona evokes a sense of ruggedness and modernity

The front is a rendition of Hyundai’s current Fluidic 2.0 design language, featuring sharply raked lines and angles, evident in the split grill design as you look at the Hyundai Kona 2020 head-on. Filling up those large wheel wells are sporty 17-inch allow wheels shod in 215/55/r17 tires.

That a lot of tire for such a small SUV. The rear pillar features a design quirk connecting the ¾ window panel to the rear glass hatch creating a floating roof look.

The rear of the 2020 Hyundai Kona mimics the front fascia but thanks to the design of the hood being longer it doesn’t look as awkward as having the same design feature on a sedan, where you wouldn’t even know if it is coming or going. It works in this configuration.

The interior is a far departure from the expectations we were having after seeing the outside of the vehicle. Some may take this as a hit against that Hyundai vehicle but the interior is well made to a point that you would be thankful that your dashboard did not come out of a science fiction book, like the exterior.

There may be some flat silver accents around the Air Conditioning vents, Shifter and steering wheel, but otherwise, that is it. The rest of the interior dash is covered by plastic.

There are soft touchpoints where it most matters but generally speaking the interior is as logical and spartan as it can be. This may be easier to clean in the long-run as simple spills may easily be wiped off plastic interiors.

Hyundai Kona Foldable Seats

The Hyundai Kona Features a useful 60:40 Rear Folding Seats

Space up-front is adequate. The front passengers are treated to a logically laid out control interface. You won't find leather-like material on the fabric seats as well but those rear seats do fold 60/40 though which is very useful if you want to haul more stuff like the rear space with seats up can barely fit a week’s worth of grocery items for a big family.

6 speakers placed around the interior keep you entertained and is controlled by an integrated console which sadly does not have smartphone integration.

Unlike the exterior, the Hyundai Kona's cabin is more conservative and logical

The sole engine configuration powering the Hyundai Kona is a 2 liter Atkinson Cycle gasoline engine with Multip-point Fuel Injection that makes 149hp and 179Nm of torque. Power delivery is best described as smooth with most of the power being available at the lower to the midsection of the rev range.

Give the accelerator a short stab and the 6-speed automatic transmission finds the right gear to get you going. With acceleration tuned for low-end engine speed, this does wonders for fuel economy and makes do without engine start/stop trickery.

When we were first introduced to the Hyundai Kona, a lot of people were apprehensive. The styling was so distinct from the rest of the crop of models that at first glance people were a little turned off by it.

But as people started seeing more of it in the flesh and with the Hyundai Kona being so competitively priced when compared to its contemporaries, it started to grow on to everyone, myself included.

The jury is still in whether the funky styling would age well, but for now, the general public seems to be loving it.

Make sure to book a test drive at the nearest Hyundai dealerships in the Philippines before pulling the trigger on a Hyundai Kona 2.0 GLS. I’m fairly certain that thousands of owners in just it’s the first year of sale can’t be wrong.

IV. About Hyundai Philippines

Established way back in 1946, Hyundai actually started out as an engineering and construction company. It wasn’t until 1967 that the Hyundai Motor Company was established. In cooperation with Ford, they made their first model a year later.

Up to 1997, Hyundai was generally known for very affordable cars that were not exactly known for their luxury. Come 1998 however, the company sought to change its image. As such, they invested a lot of resources into improving their manufacturing practices, improving quality and design, as well as developing models with longevity in mind. And it paid off in 2004 when Hyundai ranked 2nd in an initial quality survey conducted by J.D. Power.

Currently, Hyundai cars are sold and manufactured almost everywhere around the globe, from Russia to China, and here in the Philippines.

18 Years ago, Hyundai Asia Resources, Inc. more popularly known as HARI, became the official distributor of Hyundai car models here in the Philippines.

With a massive and still growing 40 strong Hyundai dealerships here in the Philippines, HARI has fought hard and is currently the 3rd largest automaker in the country right now.

If you’re interested in their models available here in the Philippines, do check out our Hyundai review section.
