2024 Toyota Corolla Cross with updated front end makes ASEAN debut

The updated Toyota Corolla Cross for the 2024 model year has debuted in Thailand. This is the second time the said model has received a facelift since its initial global launch back in 2021 and it also looks different from the updated models already being sold in Europe, Australia, and its home country of Japan.

This ASEAN model launched in the Land of Smiles could be a preview for the Philippine-spec model that will eventually roll out for the local market. So, what can be expected of the 2024 Toyota Corolla Cross? Let’s find out.

Exterior

Toyota opted to revamp the front end of the new Corolla Cross by omitting the old mesh grille in favor of a more closed-off design. It is reminiscent of the sleek front ends found on electric vehicles, but the intake of air is done via a series of hexagonal holes, as well as a lower horizontal slatted grille.

It gets a new two-tone color scheme.

The sides of the lower front bumper were likewise given a more prominent, more angular look. Likewise, the new LED headlamps of the 2024 Corolla Cross now appear sharper. Present on most variants are an automatic light control system, LED daytime running lamps, and rain-sensing wipers.

Over towards the sides, the refreshed crossover model’s higher-spec trims get new 18-inch two-tone alloy wheels. Also available are a fixed-type panoramic sunroof with an electric shade, a shark fin antenna, roof rails, and power-folding side mirrors. Likewise new is a two-tone color scheme for the top-spec version.

The rear of the refreshed Corolla Cross, meanwhile, is kitted out with a new LED taillight design that features sharper design elements. The tailgate and the lower rear bumper, however, appear to have been carried over from the pre-facelift model.

At its largest, the 2024 Toyota Corolla Cross is 4,460mm long, 1,825mm wide, and 1,620mm in height. It also features a wheelbase length of 2,640mm and a ground clearance of 161mm. So size-wise, the facelifted model is identical to the older version sold locally.

Interior

Apart from the revamped exterior, the cockpit of the Corolla Cross update received some significant changes. New to the 2024 model is a fully digital gauge cluster, as well as a larger central touchscreen display (top-spec trims).

In contrast to the old model that uses a foot-operated manual parking brake, the updated model also gained a new electronic parking brake toggle positioned on the center console. This, one can imagine, will be more convenient for most users.

Other than those, the 2024 Corolla Cross has kept the two-tiered look of the older model’s dashboard. It still gets plenty of interior soft-touch surfaces, and the control schemes for its other on-board features like its automatic air-conditioning were retained as well.

The updated model also gets a tilt and telescopic steering column, leather-clad seats, a 60:40 split-folding rear seat, an eight-way power adjustable driver’s seat, LED interior lighting (room lamp, map reading, sun visor), ambient lighting, and many others.

Tech & Safety

As mentioned above, the 2024 Corolla Cross received a larger central touchscreen display. Specifically, its central screen spans 10.1 inches, which is a good deal larger compared to the eight-inch screen on the PH-spec Corolla Cross.

For connectivity, the aforementioned touchscreen on the facelift model has wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. It is then linked to a six-piece speaker system. Powering devices inside this updated ride is also easier thanks to a wireless charging pad, as well as a series of type-C USB charging ports.

Ensuring easier parking on the top-spec trims is a panoramic view monitor, as well as a total of eight parking sensors. Standard on all variants are anti-lock braking, stability control, traction control, blind-spot monitoring, and hill-start assist, among others.

It is equipped with dual front, side, side curtain, and driver's knee airbags.

Depending on the variant, the updated Corolla Cross also gets dynamic radar cruise control, a pre-collision safety system, lane departure alert, lane trace assist, automatic high beams, tire pressure monitoring, and many other features.

Engine

For the new ASEAN 2024 Corolla Cross, Toyota carried over the pre-facelift model’s 1.8-liter gasoline and 1.8-liter hybrid powertrains. These also use a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and an electronic continuously variable transmission (e-CVT) respectively.

At the most, the non-hybrid mill can generate 138 horsepower and 172 Nm of torque. The hybrid powertrain meanwhile, has a combined output of 120 hp. In terms of torque, the hybrid’s internal combustion component can push out 142 Nm, while its electric motor makes 163 Nm.

Price

In the Land of Smiles, the 2024 Toyota Corolla Cross starts at 999,000 baht or around Php 1.559 million at current exchange rates. The top-of-the-line HEV Premium Luxury trim meanwhile, is priced at around Php 1.879 million at current exchange rates.
