In its current, Philippine spec version, the Kia Rio is a five-door hatchback that borrows a lot of design cues from European cars, hence the sporty look. Designed in Germany and California, the Kia Rio 2019 is in-fact a stylish and yet very practical hatchback which is perfect as a daily driver and as a first car for the newbie car owner.

Now with the Kia Soluto replacing the sedan version of the Rio, all variants available of the Rio right now are hatchbacks. Despite that, the Rio has still had a very cargo and passenger space. Rio can, in fact, comfortable seat five people.

As for exterior design, 2019 Kia Rio retains the upfront grille from other Kia cars, with some notable changes like the apparent width of the said grille. Also present are swept back headlamps with the seamlessly integrated projector headlights with DRLs. Premium and practical.

Towards the rear of the Kia Rio, the design tends to look to simple and but the large tail lights are LED and does their job well. The roof mounted spoiler however gives a little uptake in terms of design.

The rear looks simple and utilitarian

Inside, the Kia Rio one will immediately be surrounded by Kia’s excellently built cabin that’s quite far from what you’d expect from a budget vehicle. All the panels fit nice and tight, and the materials used even the plastic ones do not feel or look cheap at all.

Comfortable and thankfully covered in a black material to combat those stains lighter colored fabrics tend to have with age

The steering wheel of the Kia Rio is loaded with a lot of functionality. It can control the Rio’s audio, and some trim levels even have cruise control. The instrument panel, despite being built properly looks a little too plain for some people.

The controls are well built and ergonomically positioned. The most glaring fault is the lack of a touchscreen head unit

The center console of Kia Rio 2019 is well equipped with a 2-DIN audio system. A touchscreen head unit is only available with the highest GL trim variant.

Powering the Kia Rio is a Hyundai made 1.4-liter inline-4 gasoline engine that can make up to 98 horsepower and 134 NM of torque. While that isn’t something to write home about, the said figures are adequate for highway cruising and for navigating tight city roads.

Power is sent to the front wheels by either a 6-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic.

Competitors for the Kia Rio in the Philippines include the Honda Brio, Hyundai Accent, Honda Fit, Toyota Yaris, and the Ford Fiesta.

Kia rio rear cargo

2019 Kia Rio has still had a very cargo and passenger space

III. Why would you want to buy a Kia Rio 2019?

In speaking plainly, the Kia Rio is a decent, well-designed car that’s good as a small family carrier and a daily city driver. While it does not have a very powerful engine, it can get to cruising speed adequately and can be able to handle twisty mountain roads.

Don’t expect too much performance out of it though as its suspension is actually quite soft and body roll will tend to be noticeable.

When it comes to comfort, the Rio has enough in terms of space but its lack of several features common to modern car models nowadays might be its focal weakness. Regardless, the interior is built well enough and itself safe enough and roomy enough to be considered as a first family vehicle.

Kia Rio on the road

Is it worth to pay Php 746,000 for this lovely hatchback?

IV. About Kia Philippines

Established in 1944 as the Kyungsung Precision Industry, the now 2nd largest automobile manufacturer initially made bicycles. In 1952, they then changed their name to Kia Industries. Later in 1957, they made Honda licensed motorcycles and eventually cars in 1974. In 1995, Kia sold a record 24,740 cars. This of course was the result of their expansion to the United States in the 90’s.

During the Asian Financial crisis in 1997, Kia was hit hard. What saved them though is another Korean car manufacturer by the name of Hyundai. And alas, both of these companies survived by exchanging ownership with Hyundai acquiring around 51% of Kia. In turn, Kia in the present owns around 22 Hyundai Motor subsidiaries.

Kia is now developing with 32 dealerships in the Philippines

In the Philippines, Kia was brought in by the Columbian Autocar Corporation, otherwise known as CAC. In 2018 however, the Ayala Group will be acquiring 60% of the company. Nevertheless, CAC, and by extension Kia made cars, have shown to be selling well in the Philippines.

Today, Kia Philippines’ model line-up consists of the Sportage, the Grand Carnival, Picanto, Sorento, Rio, Soluto, Stinger, Forte, and several commercial purpose vehicles. For more details about every single Kia model, check out our Kia car review section.

Kia started its operation in our country in 1994. Thanks to the support from Columbian Autocar Corporation (CAC) – the exclusive distributor of Kia Motors Philippines, the Korean automaker has quickly become a familiar brand to many Pinoy customers with the sales success of the Kia Pride.

Nowadays, CAC has actively expanded Kia network throughout the Philippines with 10 sales outlets and 32 dealerships, providing local car buyers with high-quality vehicles at affordable price ranges.
