The soft-top variant of the Mazda MX-5 arrived in the Philippines in August 2015. The launch of the RF variant happened nearly two years after the soft-top launch. Mazda launched the RF in March 2017 at the Manila International Auto Show (MIAS).

The Mazda MX-5 RF’s exterior features Mazda's KODO design language – making the coupe look like it is in constant motion. The car's exterior profile is made up of sultry curves. The front fascia features slim headlights with sharp and smooth corners that are also present in the vehicle’s rear and side. Mazda maintained the vehicle’s traditional roadster shape with a short rear and a long hood that enables the motor to be pushed behind the front axle.
Mazda Philippines offers the Mazda MX-5 RF in five color options: Soul Red Crystal Metallic, Machine Gray Metallic, Jet Black Mica, Polymetal Gray, and Arctic White.
In terms of interior, the Mazda MX-5 RF can be had in various configurations depending on the customers' desire. Mazda Philippines also provides different color variations with leather upholstery in black as the base. Higher variants can be had with Nappa leather that features a lighter tone of leather.
The RF also has a Club Edition that comes with Recaro sport seats in black with red accents all around. A floating head unit is featured in the dashboard. According to the Japanese carmaker, it is in the optimal position so drivers can operate it without having to take their eyes off the road.
Technology & Safety Features
In terms of infotainment, Mazda MX-5 RF is equipped with the brand’s MZD Connect system featuring an Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity options. Passengers also have an option to connect through AUX, USB, and Bluetooth. The infotainment system also comes with a 7-inch touchscreen that uses the brand’s Command Knob.
The Japanese Roadster is also equipped with a backup camera, a set of rear parking sensors, keyless entry, and a motorized roof.
Mazda also employed the MX-5 RF with a pair of side airbags, a set of dual front airbags, three-point passenger seat belt, stability assist, ABS with EBD, and lane-departure warning system.
Platform & Chassis
Mazda MX-5 RF sits on a chassis that has almost a perfect 50-50 weight distribution. It is a two-door coupe that can accommodate two individuals. The MX-5 comes with a long hood and a minimal cargo. The car rolls on 17-inch wheels. In terms of dimension, the two-door MX-5 has a length of 3915 mm, a width of 1735 mm, and a wheelbase of 2310 mm.
The front suspension is equipped with a double-wishbone set, while the rear suspension is in the form of a multi-link pair. The Japanese automaker has reinforced and engineered the MX-5’s monocoque unibody chassis with the use of the backbone frame construction. The subframes of the front and rear suspensions provide the vehicle with more rigidity.

The power of the Mazda MX-5 RF comes from the 2.0-liter naturally-aspirated in-line four-cylinder engine that pumps out 184 horsepower and 205 Newton-meter of torque. Mazda Philippines offers the two-door Japanese coupe with two transmission options. The transmission can either be a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic that is available in higher-spec trims.
The gasoline displacement of the Mazda MX-5 RF is 1998 cc. The fuel consumption of the vehicle depends on the fuel type and variant. In general, the Japanese coupe can run 11.9 kilometers per liter on the highway. Since the MX-5 is a roadster, it merits many points relating to the handling and driving dynamics.
