Sightseeing Filipinos have another thing to look forward to when the COVID-19 pandemic blows over, as the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) opens a new coastal road in Sorsogon City, Bicol Region.
The Sorsogon Coastal Road is one of the cornerstone projects in the Bicol Region
The four-lane Sorsogon City Coastal Road spans a total of 5.52 kilometers, from Rompeolas or the Sorsogon City baywalk to Barangay Balogo in the Eastern District. In addition to easing the heavy traffic common in the city’s main thoroughfare, the project also affords road travelers with picturesque views of the adjoining coastline.
In his report, DPWH Senior Undersecretary for Luzon Operations Rafael Yabut said that the road will also provide protection to surrounding areas from the storm surges caused by these weather disturbances, as the Bicol Region is situated in the path frequented by typhoons during the rainy season.
The project features a rock causeway and three bridges with a total length of 110.70 lineal meters beginning at the Daang Maharlika junction, traversing barangays Sirangan, Sampaloc, Pangpang, Tugos, Cambulaga, and Talisay.

Protection from storm surges is also one of the road's benefits
Public Works Secretary Mark Villar considers the Sorsogon Coastal Road, jointly undertaken by the DPWH Regional Office 5 and the Sorsogon First District Engineering Office, as one of the government’s cornerstone infrastructure projects in the region.
The Sorsogon Coastal Road project is the culmination of infrastructure development plans drawn up by Sorsogon Governor and former Senator Francis “Chiz’ Escudero, and Sorsogon City Mayor Maria Ester E. Hamor. Both officials along with Undersecretary Yabut were present at the recent opening of the coastal road.
For his part, Governor Escudero expressed his gratitude to the DPWH and Secretary Villar for supporting the development of Sorsogon Province. He said that roadways such as the Sorsogon Coastal Road project will serve to improve the exchange of goods between barangays and towns. Serving as a trans-shipment point from Visayas and Mindanao, Sorsogon City is also known as the “Gateway to Southern Philippines”, and is one of the areas leading the urbanization of the Bicol Region.
