Size isn’t the only thing that the longer version of the off-roader brings.

Suzuki has finally taken the wraps off the anticipated Jimny 5-door SUV, introducing it at the Auto Expo 2023 in India alongside the Fronx subcompact crossover. Apart from the size, Suzuki’s latest off-roader now also comes with mild-hybrid tech.

The Suzuki Jimny 5-door comes to life

The extended-wheelbase mini off-roader is based on the current fourth-generation global model, utilizing the same body-on-chassis platform with a ladder frame. For the most part, it resembles the 3-door version, with the added length expected to benefit interior space and handling.

Exterior

Measurements for the new Jimny 5-door include a length of 3,985mm, a width of 1,645mm, and a height of 1,720mm. These make it 335mm longer and 5mm lower than the standard model, with the additional length also apparent in the new Jimny’s increased 2,590mm wheelbase. Ground clearance remains at 210mm.

It retains the familiar styling of the 3-door version

The familiar design elements of the 3-door Jimny have been carried over to the bigger model. These include the overall boxy design and the vertical fascia that features a grille with silver trim surrounded by LED headlamps. As the Jimny 5-door is based on the global trim (also known as the Sierra in Japan), it gets the same beefy bumper and fender extensions that are absent on the JB64 Kei variant.

Two additional doors make ingress and egress easier for rear passengers

Of course, what serves as the conversation piece on the new Jimny is the presence of an additional rear door on both sides, accompanied by a sliver of rear quarter glass. The added windows look to be a two-piece affair, topped off by a contrast black roof. Meanwhile, the rear still features the spare tire mounted on the side-swinging tailgate hovering over the protruding rear bumper. A set of 15-inch alloy wheels is standard.

Interior

There are hardly any changes to the interior layout as well, with the Jimny 5-door remaining mostly faithful to its older sibling. Angular shapes and hard-wearing surfaces dominate the cabin, still surrounding up to four occupants. The dashboard retains the familiar rugged look with large toggle switches as well as prominent rivets on the passenger side grab handle.

The utilitarian interior of the 3-door has been carried over

The benefit that a longer body brings to the Jimny is the increased cargo space, measuring at a default 208 liters and expandable to 332 liters, allowing users to bring more gear on off-road jaunts. Presumably, the longer wheelbase should also somewhat improve ride quality, but not by much.

Tech & Safety

The same array of instruments and amenities on the 3-door Jimny can be found on the longer model, with dual analog speedometer and tachometer gauges surrounding a small multi-information display. A floating-type touchscreen head unit runs Maruti Suzuki’s SmartPlay Pro+ infotainment system, complemented by wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto

Connectivity options include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto

Standard safety kit on the Jimny 5-door comprise anti-lock brakes, six airbags, electronic stability control, hill-hold assist, hill descent control, and a rear-view camera.

Engine & Drivetrain

Still powering the upsized Jimny is the mainstay 1.5-liter K15B gasoline engine rated at 105 horsepower and 134 Nm of torque. However, what’s new about the power unit is that it is also accompanied by mild-hybrid assist that brings an idle-engine start/stop system. Transmission options include a 5-speed manual and 4-speed torque-converter automatic.

The 1.5-liter gasoline engine is now enhanced with mild-hybrid tech

The Jimny 5-door utilizes Suzuki’s AllGrip Pro 4WD system, with a manual transfer case and low-range gearbox that allows users to select between 2WD High, 4WD High, and 4WD Low settings. Buoying the SUV above the ground is a 3-link rigid axle suspension.

Pricing

Maruti Suzuki says that pricing for the 2023 Suzuki Jimny 5-door will be announced in May 2023, estimated to be at Rs 12 lakh (Php 812,000). It will be assembled in India  for both local and export markets, and has been confirmed for distribution in Australia by the fourth quarter of 2023.
