An undisguised test unit was spotted filming a TV commercial in India.

The proposed Suzuki Jimny 5-door version has existed as rumors and renders, with a student project the closest it has ever come to reality. That won’t be the case any longer, as the vehicle has been spotted in India ahead of its 2023 launch.

Automotive website rushlane.com got hold of the leaked images that were said to be taken at the city of Leh, within the mountainous Ladakh region. The undisguised test mule was reportedly on location to film its launching television commercial, and the choice of locale couldn’t have been more appropriate for Suzuki’s latest off-roader.

Only the rear quarter portion of the Jimny five-door can be seen, and it closely resembles the Jimny Mountain God made by a team of students from Japan’s Nihon Automotive College (NATS) and showcased at the 2022 Tokyo Auto Salon. Both feature a small vertical window sandwiched between the C- and D-pillars as a distinguishing feature.

It bears a close physical resemblance to the Jimny Mountain God displayed at the 2022 Tokyo Auto Salon

Unlike the student project, however, the actual 5-door Jimny is not likely to feature a lift kit and monstrous 17-inch beadlock alloy wheels. The overfenders are also dialed back a bit, and the protective tubular frame surrounding the Mountain God version will be absent. As far as can be seen, the extended Jimny carries neither the Long nor Gypsy branding, at least for now.

What the 5-door Jimny does reportedly get are LED headlamps to replace the stock halogens on the standard 3-door variant. A selection of two and three seating rows are believed to be on offer within the vehicle’s boxy silhouette, although expect the interior to be not much different from the current version, apart from the increased space. The 9-inch touchscreen head unit will reportedly be retained.

Expect the cabin of the extended JImny to be as spartan as the one on its 3-door counterpart

Under the hood, this upsized mini off-roader will also likely get the same 1.5-liter inline-4 gasoline engine powering the 3-door version, good for 104 horsepower and 138 Nm of torque. This could still be partnered with the current 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic transmission choices, as well as the All Grip Pro four-wheel drivetrain

The Suzuki Jimny 5-door will be one of 16 vehicles on display at the 2023 Auto Expo in India, slated for January.

Suzuki Jimny

The Suzuki Jimny 2023 is a 4x4, ladder-frame mini-SUV. In the local market, this model is available in three different variants. There’s the GL 1.5 MT, the GLX 1.5 AT (Monotone), and the GLX 1.5 AT (Two-tone). Their prices range from Php 1,258,000 to Php 1,330,000.

Under the hood, the Suzuki Jimny uses a 1.5-liter inline-4 gasoline engine capable of producing up to 101 horsepower and 130 Nm of torque. The entry-level GL variant may come with a five-speed manual gearbox, while the GLX exclusively uses a four-speed automatic transmission. All then come with the Suzuki 4x4 All Grip Pro drivetrain.

Size-wise, the Suzuki Jimny has a length of 3,480mm, a width of 1,645mm, and a height of 1,725mm. It then has a wheelbase length of 2,250mm, and a ground clearance of 210mm.

Locally, the Suzuki Jimny technically doesn’t have direct competitors. Then again, the closest off-road-focused recreational vehicles available locally are the Toyota FJ Cruise and the Jeep Wrangler. Size-wise though, the Jimny is more in line with the Hyundai Kona, MG ZS, Geely Coolray, Kia Seltos, Chery Tiggo 2 Pro, and Mazda CX-3, among others.
