2023 Maserati GranTurismo revealed with 765-hp EV Folgore trim

The Trident’s touring beast gets a new heart.

Maserati has finally released the updated GranTurismo, and strangely enough, it doesn’t come with a V8. That’s akin to releasing a new Gundam kit without the V-fins. Some fans of the brand might raise their eyebrows at this.

But then again, the signature look of what makes a Maserati a Maserati is still quite there. Plus, for the first time ever, it now comes with a beefy electric powertrain. So in the end, it’s still quite a spicy grand tourer.

Without further ado, let’s talk about the new 2023 Maserati GranTurismo in detail and see what it offers.  

Exterior

As mentioned above, the new GranTurismo has retained the familiar styling cues typical to those on the previous version, albeit with some slight changes. Up front, it comes with a long hood and slightly revised large grille which sports the brand’s iconic trident logo. Below that is an equally sizable air vent, as well as a longer lip.  

The said air vent however, is only present on the Modena and Trofeo trim. On the Folgore all-electric variant, the space below the grille is closed up while retaining the iconic grille and side vents.

Towards the sides, the silhouette of the new GranTurismo is practically identical to the previous versions. The dramatic bulges over the wheels are still there, and the roof kept its dramatic slope angles. The update, though, has provided a new set of wheels for this model. The ones on the Folgore look slightly more ultramodern, and are dubbed as the Aero wheels.  

According to Maserati, these unique-looking Aero wheels are better at cutting through air. In fact, the Folgore in total, gets a drag coefficient (Cd) of 0.26, better than the Modena's 0.28.

The rear of the new GranTurismo likewise mirrors the previous versions but the sharp LED taillights do look a tad sharper. Also, the positioning of the rear tailpipes has been changed to be further located towards the sides. These are also quad exhausts, which is in contrast to the dual pipes of the older GranTurismo models.  

The Folgore EV of course, lacks the aforementioned quad exhausts. Instead, it gets a closed off rear section, though it still gets a black-colored air-dam just like the combustion variants.  

Interior

Step inside the all-new GranTurismo and it offers comfortable seating for two occupants. It also gets plenty of modern high-tech features which we’ll talk about in the tech section. More details about its interior features will be released later, but one can expect that the interior will be as sleek as the exterior.

Tech and safety

The all-new GranTurismo was provided with a lot of tech catapulting it into the realm of cutting edge. For instance, it uses the new Atlantis High electric architecture. This system features an in-house developed vehicle domain control module that allows for all-around control of the car’s key systems.  

A 12.2-inch digital instrument cluster lies just beyond the steering wheel. The Maserati Intelligent Assistant Multimedia system and an updated infotainment software run on the 12.3-inch central touchscreen that features Android Auto. Also present is a comfort display, wherein main functions are integrated into a touchscreen surface.

Also optional is a heads-up display, as well as a Sonus Faber 3D sound system consisting of 19 speakers, with a maximum output of 1,195 watts. If one prefers, there’s also the 14-piece, 860-watt speaker system that comes standard for all variants.  

Not much details were presented regarding safety. Then again, it is expected that the new GranTurismo will come with what you’d expect from a modern, premium vehicle.  

Maserati says that the new GranTurismo comes with a level 5 cyber-security feature, and flash-over-the-air feature for easy updating of the car’s systems.  

Engine

Now the piece de resistance when it comes to the new GranTurismo is the new electric powertrain present on the Folgore trim. This consists of three individual electric motors, which combined can churn out a total of 765 horsepower.  

Charging is also done quickly thanks to an 800V system, allowing the vehicle to pack a charge good for up to 100 kilometers of range in just five minutes.

The said system is derived from know-how gathered from the Formula E electric car racing series. Apart from that, the new GranTurismo Folgore also uses an innovative T-shaped battery which eliminates the need to position a portion of the battery pack below the occupants. This in turn offers a lower center of balance and thus, potentially better handling for the Folgore.  

With all that coupled with the slippery 0.26 drag coefficient, the electric version of the GranTurismo is capable of 0-100 km/h in just 2.7 seconds, according to Maserati.

As mentioned in the introduction, the GranTurismo is no longer available with a V8 engine. Instead, the GranTurismo combustion version gets a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 in two different states of tune. For the base variant, it can produce up to 490 horsepower. A high-performance Trofeo variant is then capable of making up to 550 horsepower. The said V6 is then paired to an eight-speed automatic gearbox, sending power to the car’s rear wheels.

Pricing for the 2023 Maserati GranTurismo Modena, Trofeo, and Folgore are yet to be revealed by the brand. However, sources say the launch may happen soon. This will coincide with the Italian brand’s introduction of the GranTurismo PrimaSerie 75th Anniversary Launch Edition.
