BMW has taken the covers off its latest 2 Series Coupé for the 2022 model year, in what the German carmaker says is a new chapter for its sporty subcompact executive range. The second-generation 2 Series is said to place greater emphasis on spirited drives with tweaks to the design, powertrain, and chassis dynamics.
The all-new BMW 2 Series Coupé
Departing from its predecessor, the new 2 Series is no longer offered with a convertible body style, and reportedly shares little of its architecture with the 2 Series Gran Coupé which predates it by two years. England’s Goodwood Festival of Speed served as the stage for the newest Bimmer’s global debut, with production to commence at the BMW Group’s San Luis Potosí facility in Mexico.
Exterior
The new 2 Series Coupé is longer (4,537mm) and wider (1,838mm) than the outgoing first generation, yet stands lower at 1,390mm. A lengthened wheelbase at 2,741mm complement the increased front and rear tracks for improved cornering dynamics.
A convertible body style is no longer an option
Among the exterior highlights on the latest 2 Series Coupé is the fascia, where circular headlamps flank the revised kidney grille design that incorporates an active air flap control system. This is followed by the car’s graceful silhouette, combined with more prominent wheel arches on the hind quarters. The rear LED light array features three-dimensional sculpting.
The grille features vertical air flaps for improved aerodynamics
A range of wheel choices are available on the 2 Series Coupé, ranging from the 17-inch alloys on the standard 220i, 18-inch M light-alloy wheels for the M Sport specification, up to 19 inches coupled with high-performance tires on the M240i xDrive.
Interior
Although the cabin features a driver-centric design, all occupants benefit from the comfort of seats decked out in cloth or Alcantara with Sensatec inserts, while Vernasca leather upholstery is an available option. The standard 220i comes with Dark Graphite interior trim pieces, while the M Sport and M240i xDrive both offer High-Gloss Black with optional Aluminum Tetragon surfaces.
A driver-centric cockpit awaits inside
Trapezoidal accents on the interior door panels can be equipped with ambient lighting, while the knee pads on the center console feature plush cushioning. The individual rear seats can be folded 40:20:40 to access the trunk, which has a maximum capacity of 390 liters. Three-zone automatic climate control lets everyone travel in comfort whatever the weather, while the optional glass sunroof overhead lets plenty of natural light inside.

Tech & Safety
The new 2 Series Coupé showcases either a BMW Live Cockpit 8.8-inch instrument cluster or a 12.3-inch BMW Live Cockpit Professional interface, both running the carmaker’s Operating System 7. For the first time in the range, a BMW Head-Up Display and BMW Drive Recorder are available.
The door panels can be enhanced with optional ambient lighting
A 10.25-inch central touchscreen integrates BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant and cloud-based BMW Navigation featuring real-time traffic data, along with BMW TeleServices for emergency calls and provision for Amazon Alexa. Smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is optional, while up to 16 Harman Kardon surround sound speakers deliver an impressive acoustic experience.
Look at that distinctive taillights
The new 2 Series Coupé comes with a suite of expanded standard and optional driver-assist systems over the previous model. These include front-collision warning, lane-departure warning, Driving Assistant with Lane Change Warning, Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function, Park Distance Control, Surround View, and Remote 3D View.
Engine
Standard on the 220i is a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 gasoline mill that generates 184 hp and 300 Nm of torque. The 220d packs a 2.0-liter diesel unit with two-stage turbocharging and 48-volt mild-hybrid technology, good for 190 hp and 400 Nm of twist. Both engines transfer power to the rear wheels through an 8-speed Steptronic transmission.
A 3.0-liter BMW TwinPower six-cylinder engine runs the M240i
For the M240i xDrive, power comes through a 3.0-liter BMW TwinPower inline-6 gasoline engine rated at 374 hp and 500 Nm of torque. An all-wheel drivetrain works in concert with the 8-speed Steptronic Sport gearbox that features gearshift paddles on the steering wheel. All trim levels feature an extensively tuned chassis borrowed from the BMW 4 Series, buoyed by a range of suspension options.
Pricing
The 2022 BMW 2 Series Coupé is expected to carry a price tag of £35,000 (around Php 1.74 million) for the standard 220i, with the M240i xDrive coming in at £46,000 (around Php 2.29 million). Will this new Bimmer be next on your shopping list?
