Japanese automaker Nissan will be phasing out its pure combustion models from the European market beginning in 2023, accelerating its transition to sustainable mobility and a completely electrified lineup by the end of the decade.
Nissan introduces a new and exciting electrified line-up for Europe
The company announced that it aims to launch 23 new electrified models by 2030, headlined by a range of six nameplates that will be arriving in the summer of 2022. According to Nissan, this plays a major role in its Ambition 2030 program.
“Nissan is charging towards an electrified future, with Europe leading the way,” said Guillaume Cartier, Chairperson, Nissan Africa, Middle East, India, Europe and Oceania Region. “We have established a clear direction through Ambition 2030 and with our new electrified line-up we are truly paving the way to a sustainable future."
The Juke Hybrid is the subcompact crossover's latest iteration
The carmaker has decided not to invest in new passenger cars that are compliant with Euro 7 emissions standards, offering electrified options instead. It is targeting to have 75 percent of overall sales in Europe comprise such vehicles by fiscal year 2026, eventually shifting to a 100 percent electrified range by 2030.
One of the six models launching this year is the Juke Hybrid. This newest iteration of the subcompact crossover will come with a multi-modal powertrain, allowing it to alternate between an internal combustion engine and electric motor or combine both for forward propulsion.
Nissan e-Power debuts in Europe through the third-generation Qashqai
Another technological showcase for Nissan is e-Power, a series hybrid setup where the combustion engine charges the battery for the electric motor that spins the drive wheels, reducing fuel consumption as well as emissions. This will be featured on both the all-new Qashqai e-Power and X-Trail e-Power compact crossovers, with the latter also equipped with the e-4ORCE twin-motor all-wheel drivetrain.
Meanwhile, Nissan’s fully electric lineup will be headlined by the LEAF, the world’s first mass-market electric vehicle. More than 577,000 LEAF units have been sold worldwide, amounting to over 9 billion zero emissions kilometers traveled since the model’s debut in 2010.
The Ariya is Nissan's first electric SUV
An electric version of the Nissan Townstar light commercial vehicle has also been introduced, powered by an electric motor that delivers 120 horsepower and 244 Nm of torque. A 44-kilowatt hour battery allows for 285 kilometers of range on a single charge.
Lastly, Nissan will be bringing in the Ariya, its first all-electric compact crossover. Built on the Common Module Family (CMF-EV) platform, it also features e-4ORCE all-wheel-drive as well as e-Pedal technology enabling single pedal operation for both acceleration and braking.
