Toyota’s popular seven-seater nameplate finally gets an update

The Toyota Avanza, in its second generation form, has been going strong since its global release all the way back in 2011. The model received a couple of facelifts since then, but now in 2022, Toyota Motor Philippines has finally brought in the all-new, third-generation Avanza. Let’s take a closer look at this new model, shall we?

Exterior

When it comes to looks, the new 2022 Toyota Avanza assumes a contemporary design which mirrors the exterior of other Daihatsu-sourced models.

Like the Raize, the new Avanza gets a wide quadrilateral grille flanked by angular fog lamp housings. It then gets a pair of sharp-looking multi-section LED headlamps, as well as sequential turn signal lamps.

The side profile is also straighter and more parallel to the ground compared to the outgoing model. For the top-spec variant, the new Avanza also gets auto-folding side mirrors. It also rides on a set of new 16-inch alloy wheels.

The entry-level trim gets a simpler 15-inch steel wheel set, while the mid-spec variant comes with a 15-inch alloy wheel set. Its rear end then features a pair of larger LED tail lights.

Interior

While the exterior looks more modern, the interior also comes with several adjustments for better usability and comfort. The dashboard has been rearranged, and all variants now come with manual air-conditioning with digital controls.

It can still seat up to seven, but the all-new Avanza now comes with better seating adjustability. For instance, the second-row seats can now be folded in a way that it can serve as foot rests for the third-row. Likewise, the first-row seating can connect to the second row.

The top-of-the-line G also comes with a push-to-start button, a 4.2-inch multi-info display, as well as steering-wheel-mounted audio controls.

Tech & Safety

Depending on the variant, the 2022 Toyota Avanza is kitted out with a new eight-inch touchscreen head unit. This monitor features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as Bluetooth and USB connectivity.

The new Avanza keeps its occupants safe with features such as stability control, hill-start assist, anti-lock braking with electronic brake-force distribution, rear parking sensors, ISOFIX child seat anchors, and seatbelt warning. It is also made secure via its built-in car alarm, engine immobilizer, and speed sensing door locks.

On the high-spec 1.5 G CVT model, also present are new driver assist features. These include blind-spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert.

The entry-level trims then get dual-front airbags, whereas the higher trims come with six airbags in total.

Engine & Drivetrain

Before talking about engine options, it is crucial to note that the 2022 Toyota Avanza rides on a totally new platform. Specifically, it’s the Daihatsu New Global Architecture (DNGA-B), which it shares with the Toyota Raize.

That said, the Avanza is now a true-blue unibody model that’s more akin to a crossover, with the previous half-unibody, half-ladder frame chassis no longer used. The said platform also means that the Avanza is now a front-wheel-drive model.

Under the hood of the new Avanza is a choice of either a 1.3-liter inline-4 gasoline engine or a 1.5-liter inline-4 gasoline engine. The latter can produce up to 105 horsepower and 138 Nm of torque, while the smaller power unit can make 97 horsepower and 122 Nm of torque.

Being a FWD model, the new Avanza's engine is now transversely mounted

Of note, the said engines are the same ones from the outgoing model. The 1.3-liter can also be paired with a five-speed manual gearbox, though the four-speed automatic has been replaced with a continuously variable transmission.

As for the suspension system, the new Avanza uses MacPherson struts for the front and a torsion beam axle for the rear. For all trims, braking is handled by disc brakes for the front, and drum brakes for the rear.
