Toyota’s small MPV is now on its way to the Philippines.

Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) ended 2021 on a strong note as it posted a 46.3 percent market share, maintaining its foothold as the number one car brand in the country. TMP is looking to carry its sales momentum from last year as it plans to bring back its total sales this 2022 at pre-pandemic levels.

The arrival of the 2022 Toyota Raize is the start of TMP’s push to achieve its sales target. In fact, it plans to sell 1,000 Raize units per month. Aside from the Raize, TMP will be bringing in another model this first quarter of 2022, the next-generation Toyota Avanza.

A report from Wheels.ph said that TMP will be launching the 2022 Avanza in March, which is already next month. The next-gen Avanza has already been launched in Indonesia, and it is scheduled to debut in Thailand this February. Specific details for the upcoming PH-spec Toyota Avanza have yet to be released but a quick look at the specs on our ASEAN neighbors could give us a hint on what to expect.

The all-new Toyota Avanza’s exterior comes with a bolder and more aggressive design while the interior features a revamped layout. Aside from the new styling, the Avanza now comes with monocoque or unibody construction as compared to the old ladder-frame design, translating to better ride comfort. It now also comes with a front-wheel-drive layout, which is similar to its segment rivals such as the Mitsubishi Xpander.

In Indonesia, the 2022 Toyota Avanza is powered by either a 1.3-liter or 1.5-liter gasoline engine. The 1.3-liter gasoline power unit delivers 98 hp and 121 Nm of torque while the 1.5-liter engine produces 106 hp and 137 Nm. Transmission options for the all-new Toyota Avanza could either be a five-speed manual or a continuously variable transmission (CVT) with sequential mode.

But in the Land of Smiles, the Avanza will reportedly be offered with a 1.5-liter gasoline engine only that is connected to a CVT. Could TMP follow the same route as the reported sole power unit and transmission option of the Thai-spec Avanza? To put things in perspective, the current Avanza available in the Philippines is offered with either a 1.3-liter or a 1.5-liter gasoline engine. It comes with a four-speed automatic transmission except for the entry-level variant that has a five-speed manual gearbox.

What about the Avanza Veloz? Well, it is available in Indonesia, and it is also said to be included in Thailand. This could mean that TMP will also offer it among the variant options of the upcoming Avanza.
