Volkswagen introduced a new advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) technology that can automatically change lanes on the highway in the ID. Buzz.

The new technology is called the Travel Assist. As the name suggests, it aims to provide not only a more convenient experience but also a safer drive. Travel Assist uses swarm data, which allows participating Volkswagen models to perpetually transmit road information to the cloud to improve the system.
To start, drivers have to be on the highway for above 90 km/h. By simply tapping the turn signal in the desired direction, the Volkswagen ID. Buzz will steer itself, given that the driver’s hands are still on the steering wheel. The system detects any surrounding objects to ensure a safe lane change.
The Travel Assist uses swarm data
For safety, the driver can intervene at any time and take over the steering wheel. In addition to the safety of the new technology, Travel Assist uses the adaptive lane guidance system, keeping the vehicle in the middle of its lane. It also consists of predictive cruise control and a cornering assist function.
Another new technology is the ID. Buzz is the Park Assist Plus with memory function. This can be used to teach the vehicle up to five individual parking maneuvers. Once the parking maneuvers have been saved, all the drivers have to do is monitor the situation.

We are taking the next step forward on the way to highly automated driving with the use of swarm data in the latest Travel Assist,” said Kai Grünitz, Member of the Volkswagen Brand Board of Management responsible for Development.

Furthermore, standard ADAS features in the Volkswagen ID. Buzz includes swerve support, Autonomous Emergency Braking, Front Assist with Pedestrian and Cyclist Monitoring, Lane Keeping System, and Car2X traffic alert function, among others. Meanwhile, optional assist systems are Adaptive Cruise Control, Area View, anti-theft alarm system, and keyless advanced locking and starting system.
