Not only does the Volkswagen ID. Buzz contributes to reducing carbon emissions, but can also be regarded as a “vegan” bus as it only uses non-animal materials. The production will start in Europe in the first half of 2022, with the advanced sales in the said region to start in May 2022.

“The T1 – an icon of the 1950s – represents freedom and the democratization of mobility. With the ID. Buzz, we are transferring the T1 DNA to the present day and thus into the era of electric mobility and sustainability,” said Volkswagen Head of Design Jozef Kabaň.

Exterior

Coming out with an identical design to the 2017 concept car, the Volkswagen ID. Buzz will be available in two configurations, namely the standard wheelbase and cargo. The standard version measures 4,712 mm long, 1,985 mm wide, and 1,937 mm high, with the cargo version offering one more millimeter in height.

LEDs are used for the lighting system all around the all-electric bus. To pay homage to the iconic T1, the ID. Buzz is embedded with a large VW logo at the front. 18-inch steel wheels come as standard. But on passenger vehicle models, customers can avail of aluminum-alloy wheels ranging from 18 to 21 inches.

Interior

As said earlier, the all-electric bus is designed with non-animal materials. This is part of the German marque’s efforts in growing sustainability in its portfolio. The steering wheel cover is made of polyurethane, while recycled materials are used for the seat covers, floor coverings, and roof liner. A fabric with fibers made of 10 percent collected ocean plastic and 90 percent recycled PET bottles is incorporated as well.

It will be added with a 6-seat configuration for the standard wheelbase, with plans to roll out a 7-seat configuration for the extended wheelbase version. Additionally, the cabin gets to benefit from a standard 10-color ambient lighting system.

Tech & Safety

The Volkswagen ID. Buzz is equipped with a 10-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10-inch infotainment system as standard. Customers can avail of a larger 12-inch touchscreen display with navigation as an option. Controls for various functions such as digital buttons and touch sliders are found just beneath the infotainment screen.

Powertrain

Based on the Volkswagen Group’s Modular Electric Drive Kit (MEB), the Volkswagen ID. Buzz has a 77 kW high-voltage lithium-ion battery at the back. It supplies power to an electric motor mounted on the rear axle which is capable of delivering 201 horsepower and 310 Nm of torque. Volkswagen said that it will release more battery versions with various power output levels next year. Moreover, the German automaker has yet to release the electric driving range of the ID. Buzz.

VW T1 lives on

The charging power when using alternating current (AC) is 11 kW, while a 170 kW charging power can be utilized via a CCS plug connector at a DC fast-charging station. Bi-directional charging is enabled which allows the all-electric bus to transfer power from its battery into the domestic grid (vehicle-to-home).
