The recall is due to faulty engine management software.

Safety recalls are still bound to occur despite the efforts put up by carmakers to make their vehicles spotless. Recalls happen since cars are integrated with various components. That said, Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) is recalling its flagship sports coupe due to a safety issue with its oil/vacuum pump, which could affect the GR Supra’s braking assist feature.

The said safety recall on the Toyota GR Supra is due to faulty engine management software that could cause the oil/vacuum pump to be damaged under certain start conditions. As such, TMP is recalling the vehicle to fix the component that supplies vacuum for brake assistance.

The oil/vacuum pump can be potentially damaged in two ways. The first is when pressing the start/stop button two times in rapid succession; or when depressing the brake pedal very briefly while pressing the engine start/stop button. Of note, full mechanical braking is not affected but an increase in stopping distance could occur. The said scenario could increase the potential of a crash.

Toyota PH is recalling 176 units of the GR Supra

According to Carguide.ph, TMP is recalling 176 units of the Toyota GR Supra. The affected local units were said to be produced from March 29, 2019 to June 5, 2020. TMP needs to fix the vehicle’s engine management software to address the issue. Owners of the affected GR Supra will not be charged for this service.

The GR Supra is also being recalled in the United States for the same issue. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) states that 13,014 units of the Supra are being recalled in the US market.

The Toyota GR Supra is powered by a 3.0-liter in-line six-cylinder twin-scroll turbocharged gasoline that can produce 335 hp and 500 Nm of torque. The engine is connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission, and power is sent to the rear wheels.
