The model bested all other cars tested in 2020 and 2021.

The Subaru Outback aced crash tests at the European New Car Assessment Programme (NCAP), garnering the highest overall score of 88.8 percent across all vehicles evaluated for the 2020-2021 model years.

The Subaru Outback trumped all other cars tested by Euro NCAP for two consecutive model years

Going through the gauntlet in Euro-spec trim, the station wagon delivered stellar marks in four assessment areas. It achieved 88 percent for Adult Occupant protection, 89 percent for Child Occupant protection, 84 percent in terms of Vulnerable Road User protection, and 95 percent for its Safety Assist systems.

According to the Euro NCAP Flashback 2021 report, the Outback tied with the Nissan Qashqai compact crossover for the safety assist rating. The testing body credits the achievement with the inclusion of automated emergency braking (AEB), lane support, speed, and attention assist systems.

For Adult Occupant protection, the Outback’s frontal impact performance scored 13.8 out of 16 points, 14 out of 16 points for lateral impact, 3.8 out of 4 points for rear impact, and 2 out of 2 points for rescue and extrication features. Euro NCAP notes that the vehicle provided sufficient protection to the occupants’ critical body regions.

The model's range of driver-assist systems helped it deliver outstanding protection

When it came to Child Occupant protection, the vehicle managed 23 out of 24 points for crash test performance, 9 out of 13 points for safety features, and a perfect 12 points for child restraint systems installation.

For Vulnerable Road Users, the Outback achieved 30.7 out of 36 points for pedestrian impacts and 14.7 out of 18 points in using its EyeSight Auto-Brake with Forward Collision Warning feature. The latter is divided into AEB for pedestrians (7 out of 9 points) and AEB in the presence of cyclists (7.7 out of 9 points).

In terms of Safety Assist, the vehicle earned 2.5 out 3 points for using the camera-based speed limit function, a perfect 3 out of 3 points for occupant status monitoring (a new testing parameter for Euro NCAP), another perfect score of 4 out of 4 points for lane support, and 5.8 out of 6 points for AEB car-to-car application.

Philippine Outback owners are likely leaning back in satisfaction

Apart from the Outback’s suite of passive, active, and driver-assist systems, it is also underpinned by the Subaru Global Platform. The body has been strengthened by a new structural frame, providing lightweight protection and enhanced impact energy absorption. Those who have purchased the current sixth-generation Outback in the Philippine market have every reason to feel confident where safety is concerned.
