Rolls-Royce announced the progress of the all-electric Spectre’s testing program, which has now clocked close to two million kilometers.
Rolls-Royce Spectre
As the Rolls-Royce Spectre has covered almost two million kilometers, the third phase of the testing program is completed. This is said to be the most rigorous testing program ever devised in the British automaker’s 118-year history.
“Spectre has already secured its place as the most anticipated Rolls-Royce in history. This remarkable and transformative motor car represents the beginning of the marque’s bold electric era, as well as our unquestionable technological leadership of the super-luxury space,” said Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Torsten Müller-Ötvös.
The recently-concluded testing phase was conducted in two locations in South Africa, namely Augrabies in the Northern Cape and Franschhoek. Rolls-Royce took advantage of the region’s hot temperatures that can exceed 50 degrees Celsius in refining its new all-electric car’s various systems.
One of the tests conducted is improving the Rolls-Royce Spectre’s regenerative braking, dedicating over 1,500 hours to fine-tune the system. The team wants to ensure that the adjustments do not compromise the overall serenity of Spectre under any driving conditions.
The Spectre is bound to finish a 2.5-km testing program
Moreover, Rolls-Royce is finessing the NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness) of the Spectre. The challenge is delivering the brand’s famed aero-acoustic performance by making adjustments to the sealing materials, which softened in the hot temperatures of South Africa and hardened during its testing in the cold Arjeplog in Sweden.
Once the data collected in the South Africa phase has been fully analyzed, the testing program will be around 80 percent. Targeted to register a total of 2.5 million km of testing, the final 500,000 km will focus on Lifestyle Analysis, enhancing the electric vehicle’s (EV) capabilities in “super-luxury situations.”
“The reason for our extraordinary and restless global testing process is simple: there has never been a motor car like Spectre before. As the first all-electric Rolls-Royce, Spectre represents not just a new paradigm in our technology, but the entire future direction of our brand,” said Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Director of Engineering Dr. Mihiar Ayoubi.
The brand's first fully-electric car
Following the record-setting year for Rolls-Royce in the sales department, the Spectre EV is looking to further add new customers to the brand. Scheduled to start deliveries in Q4 2023, the upcoming model is said to have already exceeded pre-order expectations.
