Korean car brand Hyundai is ending the production run of the Ioniq, which is set to happen in July 2022. Its discontinuation comes a mere six years after its initial launch in 2016. But then again, this isn’t the last time we’ll be hearing about the Ioniq.
The Hyudani Ioniq
Of note, the Ioniq model was a big deal for Hyundai as it was its first-ever hybrid model. Among its list of accolades include being the most efficient electric vehicle rated by the United States Environmental Protection Agency.
Hyundai also managed to sell around 135,000 Ioniq units in Europe between 2016 and 2021. The brand even claims that it has surpassed its sales targets for this model. Furthermore, it was also the world’s first-ever model that was available with three electrified powertrains. These include hybrid, battery-electric, and plug-in hybrid.
It also managed to attain a five-star rating from the European New Car Assessment Programme thanks to its comprehensive safety kit.
As mentioned though, the Ioniq brand name won’t be totally gone. Instead, and much like the Genesis luxury brand, it will stand as a new sub-brand under Hyundai.
It will focus on the electric vehicle market, and it will be offering fully electric-powered models, hybrids, and plug-in hybrids.
The new Ioniq sub-brand is also set on releasing a series of new models, some of which you might have already heard of. For starters, it has already rolled out the Ioniq 5 electric compact crossover in 2021.
The Ioniq as a brand name isn't done just yet
The said crossover will then be followed by the new Ioniq 6 midsize sedan, which is based on the Prophecy concept car which was unveiled in Geneva back in 2020.
After that, it will then introduce its largest-ever model in 2024. It’s dubbed the Ioniq 7, and it falls under the midsize crossover class. And yes, this might be the first-ever seven-seater Ioniq model, but take this with a grain of salt.
