6 hybrid cars you can buy in the Philippines below Php 3 million

They’re still pricey, but you can be sure that they’re fuel-efficient.

Intro

As time marches on, more and more car manufacturers are seeking to provide sustainable forms of transportation. In recent years, these come in the form of electric cars and hybrid cars.  

Here in the Philippines however, fully electric cars are yet to hit the mainstream. Hybrids however are here, but most of them are quite expensive.

So which are the most affordable hybrid cars in the Philippines right now? Well, we’ve come up with a list of six models that are priced below Php 3 million. That said, can still make your wallet cry uncle, but most of these cars are economical to run, and have a smaller carbon footprint than regular internal combustion cars. 

Toyota Corolla Altis 1.8 V Hybrid

The first car on this list is the Corolla Altis 1.8 V Hybrid. It currently sits as the Corolla Altis’ top-spec variant, and it has a price tag of Php 1,595,000.

As a top-spec model, the Corolla Altis V Hybrid is loaded with features. For instance, it is the only Corolla Altis trim that comes with a drive select mode with a sport and EV mode, as well as the Toyota Safety Sense driver-assist suite. This includes auto high-beams, lane trace and departure assist, as well as dynamic radar cruise control. It also has seven airbags, automatic climate control, and an eight-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. 

Under the hood of the Corolla Altis V Hybrid is a 1.8-liter inline-4 gasoline engine paired with an electric motor. Combined, this powertrain can make up to 121 horsepower and 145 Nm of torque. Power is then sent to its front wheels via a continuously variant transmission (CVT).

Toyota Prius 1.8 Hybrid

Next up on this list is the first-ever hybrid car that was introduced in the local market. It is also the first hybrid-powered vehicle to gain a global mainstream following. Of course, we're talking about the Toyota Prius.

The Philippine-spec Prius looks a bit sporty right?

For the Philippine market, this model is available as the Prius 1.8 Hybrid CVT five-seater sedan. It has a price tag of Php 2,339,000, and provides a lot of features for its users. Chief among these is a seven-inch touchscreen display that’s linked to a 10-piece JBL speaker system. It also has seven airbags, stability control, traction control, and cruise control. 

Powering the Philippine-spec Prius is a 1.8-liter inline-4 gasoline engine. Combined with its electric motor, it is capable of making up to 121 horsepower and 163 Nm of torque. It is also a front-wheel-drive vehicle and it uses a CVT. 

Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV

For those wanting a larger hybrid vehicle that will do well as a family chariot, then there’s the Mitsubishi Outlander. Its only variant in the Philippines is the Outlander PHEV, and it has a price of Php 2,998,000.  

At most, the Outlander PHEV can seat up to five. On top of that, its boot has a sizable 860-liters of default cargo space. It also keeps its occupants comfortable with leather seats, an electronically adjustable driver’s seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, as well as an eight-inch headunit that can link to smartphones through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The Outlander PHEV can make for an elegant family cruiser

Moving on to powertrains, the Outlander PHEV uses a 2.4-liter inline-4 gasoline mill and a permanent magnet synchronous motor. Being a PHEV, this Mitsubishi-made crossover also has a lithium-ion battery that can be charged to full in just 5.5 hours. 

At maximum, the Outlander’s hybrid powertrain can generate up to 128 horsepower and 199 Nm of torque. It uses a GKN Multimode eTransmission, which utilizes an active wet clutch. Power is then sent to all four wheels.  

Toyota Corolla Cross 1.8V Hybrid

The third Toyota hybrid car on this list is the Corolla Cross 1.8V Hybrid. It currently has a price of Php 1,650,000, and it uses a similar powertrain as the Toyota Corolla Altis. In fact, this model is essentially the crossover version of the Corolla Altis hybrid.

In terms of engine output, the Corolla Cross hybrid can make up to 120 horsepower and 142 Nm of torque. It also uses a CVT, and it’s also a front-wheel-drive model.  

Being a crossover however, it can provide more passenger room and cargo room. It also has a wealth of interior features including an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, automatic climate control, and leather seats.  

Safety-wise, it is on par with the Corolla Altis hybrid as it also gets seven airbags, as well as the Toyota Safety Sense suite. 

Geely Azkarra Luxury

Yet another hybrid crossover on this list is the Geely Azkarra Luxury. Right now, it can be had for Php 1,598,000. For that price, owners of the Azkarra Luxury are provided with active parking assist, cruise control, a dual-zone automatic climate control system, Nappa Leather seats, an electronically adjustable driver’s seat, a sunroof, and a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system.

Another hybrid-powered family car candidate

For safety, this Geely-made vehicle also gets seven airbags, tire-pressure monitoring, traction control, stability control, speed-sensing door locks, hill-start assist, among others. 

When it comes to powertrains, the Azkarra uses a turbocharged 1.5-liter gasoline engine combined with a 48-volt EMS. At maximum, this system can generate up to 190 horsepower and 300 Nm of torque. It then uses a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox that can be controlled manually using paddle shifters. Power is then sent to all four wheels. 

To this end, this makes the Azkarra one of the more powerful hybrid crossovers on this list. 

Lexus IS300h

Last but not the least on this list is the Lexus IS 300h. Technically, it is the only luxury vehicle listed here. It is, however, the entry-level variant of the IS sedan, and it commands a price of Php 2,978,000. 

As a premium vehicle, the IS 300h comes with a lot of niceties. For starters, it gets an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, leather seats, dual-zone automatic air-conditioning, a power tilt and telescopic steering column, rain-sensing wipers, an eight-inch Lexus display audio system, a 10-piece premium sound system, and many others.

Safety, this sedan also has eight airbags, lane departure alert, automatic high beams, lane trace assist, hill-start assist, among others. 

As for what’s under its hood, the IS 300h uses a 2.5-liter inline-4 gasoline engine paired with an electric motor. In total, it can make 220 horsepower and 221 Nm of torque. Power is then sent to its rear-wheels through a CVT.
