Launched way back in 1997, the Toyota Prius was the first-ever mass-produced, mass-marketed gasoline-electric hybrid. It is now in its fourth generation and it has evolved into the go-to reliable hybrid car for just about anyone in the world but most especially in the North American and European continents.

For the Philippines though, we only got the Prius in 2009. So it wasn’t as big a hit here compared to other markets. It’s the first and most popular hybrid by far though and nothing will take that away from the Prius.

For the one we currently have available, the Prius on the outside has now become this really modern and sharp looking vehicle. Gone is the awkward “shoe with wheels” and it is replaced with something more akin to the Toyota Mirai.

From the rear of the Prius, you can find boomerang-shaped headlights and its liftback design also does much to its style factor. And yeah, the rear door opens up wide.

The Toyota Prius 2020 is no longer awkward looking that's for sure

Also interesting is the roof-line. It’s now sloped to make the vehicle more aerodynamic. Down below, you will also appreciate the Yokohama A-Spec tires. Combine that with the slightly rigid ride and you have a Prius that’s surprisingly nimble on the turns.

Interestingly enough, the Prius is also the first vehicle to ever make use of the Toyota New Global Architecture or TNGA, specifically the TNGA-C which of course explains the change in handling and driving dynamics.

Inside, you will be presented with a two-tone interior which quite frankly offers quite a bit of freshness to the typical Toyota vehicles. There are a lot of interesting shapes like how the infotainment is seamlessly integrated into the dash and the oval AC ducts will also catch your eye.

You’ll also find that most of the surfaces are also pleasing to the touch. There’s the leather-clad steering wheel and seats and hard plastics are minimal.

The interior looks nice and more's really well insulated from noise

Under the hood, is a gasoline 1.8-liter DOHC inline-4. It puts out a decent 97 horsepower and 142 Nm of torque. Being a hybrid, the Prius also comes with an electric motor capable of making around 68 horsepower and 163 Nm. Combined, the Toyota Prius makes around 131 horsepower and 207 Nm of torque which is pretty decent for a car of its size.

When talking about cabin space, the Toyota Prius 2020 is really generous. The headroom for the front passenger and driver is sufficient. For the rear passengers, there’s no problem when it comes to legroom. Headroom on the other-hand might be an issue for taller people due to the car’s sloping roofline.

The Prius' rear end really looks interesting now especially with its pair of boomerang tail-lights

The Prius’ trunk space is also pretty decent at 502 liters. Fold down the rear seats and you can expand that space more.

III. Why would you want to buy a Toyota Prius 2020?

If you really want a hybrid car that much. The Toyota Prius might be the best choice for you because it was the first hybrid car that has proven itself to mass-market appeal and reliability.

It’s also the first hybrid car to be released here in the Philippines and while it isn’t that popular, the few that we have seen running around Metro Manila are actual tangible proofs that hybrid cars are viable here in the Philippines.

While there are new hybrids being released here in the country like the Hyundai Ioniq, the Hyundai Kona Hybrid, the Prius is still the O.G. vehicle when it comes to combining combustion and electricity into mobility.

Toyota PRIUS 2020

As for the 2020 Toyota Prius 1.8 Hybrid itself, it presents a few positives, especially for a daily driver. First, it’s really quiet. The engine sound is barely audible, maybe except when you put the pedal to the metal but otherwise, it’s a very cushy ride. Second is the space.

The 502 liters of trunk space will do great for going on out of town trips or as a school mobile. For you know, those enormous bags that school kids carry around nowadays. And lastly, is the hybrid’s excellent fuel economy which is rated at 20 km/l in tight city roads. Weirdly enough, the Prius is actually less fuel-efficient on the highway.

Why? Because on highway speeds, the car uses the gasoline engine most of the time. Even on the highway though, the Prius can still return up to 19 km/l which isn’t bad at all.

Also, the 2020 Prius has a really stylish rear end

There are some downsides. For starters, the Toyota Prius here in the Philippines is very expensive. Currently, the Prius 1.8 Hybrid has a retail price of Php 2,289,000. While that’s lower thanks to the new excise taxes, a Prius with around the same specs in the U.S. costs around USD 27,820. That’s only Php 1,418,820 pesos.

The last and biggest “con” when it comes to the Prius stems from the stigma from cay guys, especially in the United States. While that might not be present here in the Philippines, what a Prius owner will experience here locally instead will be A LOT of questions from curious folks, car guys or otherwise.
