Barely a year has passed since Hyundai launched the Ioniq 5, and the vehicle is already getting the industry’s attention. It’s currently in contention for overall German Car of the Year (GCOTY), having clinched the victory in the ‘New Energy’ category.
The Ioniq 5 bested its European rivals in the German Car of the Year Awards New Energy category
The all-electric midsize crossover beat out its competitors such as the BMW iX and Mercedes-Benz EQS, which convinced the GCOTY jury comprising an international selection of 20 motoring journalists. In terms of market reception, the Ioniq 5 proved to be very popular with customers, averaging over 7,000 units a month over a five-month period.
Given its class victory, the first model under Hyundai’s Ioniq sub-brand will now face off against winners in other categories for the top honors, including the Kia EV6 which triumphed in the Premium classification. Both the Ioniq 5 and EV6 are built around Hyundai's Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP). The overall winner of the GCOTY will be announced on November 25, 2021.

“IONIQ 5 advancing to the final round of the German Car of the Year after securing a win in the ‘New Energy’ category proves that our fully-electric midsize CUV is a leader in the European car market,” said Hyundai Motor Europe Vice President for Marketing and Product Andreas-Christoph Hofmann. “IONIQ 5 is an essential part of our electrification strategy. This further success underlines our company’s strength in zero-emission mobility.”

Sibling rivalry ensues as the Ioniq 5 faces off against its Kia EV6 platform twin for top honors
Apart from the GCOTY, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 was also named Car of the Year by U.K. motoring website Auto Express, apart from receiving prizes in the ‘Mid-size Company Car,’ ‘Premium Electric Car,’ and ‘Design Award’ categories.
The Ioniq 5 also earned honors ‘Best Company Car’ and ‘Best Family Electric Car’ honors from the 2022 Carbuyer Best Car Awards, as well as ‘Best Designed Car of the Year’ and ‘Motoring Innovation of the Year’ titles from the 2021 News U.K. Motor Awards.
