Hyundai announced the Ioniq 6 has secured the Top Safety Pick+ at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in the US. The all-electric midsize sedan managed to perform well at the safety program’s more stringent crashworthiness evaluations.

The Top Safety Pick+ is the highest safety rating at IIHS, with the Top Safety Pick serving as the low-tier award.

To receive such recognition, a vehicle must earn good ratings in the driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, original moderate overall front, and updated side tests. It must also have “acceptable” or “good” headlights as standard, as well as an “advanced” or “superior” rating in daytime and nighttime vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluations.

This accomplishment is said to reinforce the brand’s commitment to driver and pedestrian safety.

“At Hyundai, ensuring customer safety is foundational to our brand and at the center of what we do,” said Hyundai Motor Company Global Chief Safety Officer Brian Latouf.

“It’s exciting to see the Ioniq 6, Hyundai’s newest electric vehicle, obtain the highest level of safety,” said IIHS President David Harkey. “Making sure safety continues to be a priority in alternatively powered vehicles is critical if we are going to achieve this vision of zero traffic fatalities.”

The Top Safety Pick+ joins the Ioniq 6’s long list of achievements since its introduction in 2022. Some of these include the 2023 EV of the Year Award from the Car and Driver, the ‘Gold’ award in the iF Design Award 2023’s Product category, and a hat trick at the 2023 World Car Awards.

For the price, the EV offers a range of up to 545 kilometers, an 18-minute charging time from 10 to 80 percent using a DC fast charger, and Hyundai SmartSense, among others.
