Toyota needs a proper subcompact crossover contender.

As renowned as Toyota is among Filipinos for reliability, they don’t have all the bases covered yet as far as the local market is concerned. For instance, the subcompact crossover segment has been buzzing for quite a while now with numerous contenders to the throne, and Toyota is being uncharacteristically late to the party.

However, one would argue that the carmaker has been keeping a close eye on the competition while tucking its own ace up its sleeve until the time was right. Finally, Toyota unveiled the Yaris Cross in 2020, sporting a design that resulted from a collaboration between the company’s Japanese and European design arms.

The standard Yaris Cross is already a head-turner

We previously reported that the Yaris Cross would be making its way here in the first quarter of the year, but with March drawing to a close, the model will have to take a rain check. As we’re still waiting for our turn for the standard variant, North American fans already get a more rugged trim level in the form of the Yaris Cross Adventure trim.

Toyota has pulled the covers off of the Yaris Cross Adventure for the North American market

It sports largely the same body cladding as the regular Yaris Cross, with a few differences such as the front diffuser and protection plate on the rear bumper. Silver rails adorn the blacked-out roof up top, while a set of 18-inch dark gray alloy wheels can be found down below, and those are exclusive to this trim level.

The interior is retained from the regular Yaris Cross, for the most part, sporting the same head- and leg room for five occupants as well as niceties such as the touchscreen audio head unit. Added elements include more piano black trim and a black headliner, along with special seats.

We dare not wish for something as extravagant from Toyota (well, not yet anyway), as long as they can give us a timetable for the regular Yaris Cross first. Can the local market expect it along with the other anticipated arrivals this year? Your guess is as good as ours.
