The latest iteration continues its range of electrified powertrains.

Jaguar Land Rover premieres the latest iteration of its Range Rover Sport for the 2023 model year. The midsize SUV continues to pack a range of conventional and electrified powertrains, now joined by a new V8 twin-turbo gasoline engine.

The new model was introduced in spectacular fashion, ascending a flooded spillway of the Karahnjukar Dam in Iceland. Helmed by official James Bond stunt driver Jessica Hawkins, the SUV demonstrated its power by going against water flowing at 750 tons per minute, risking a 90-foot drop all the way to the valley below.

This was just the latest in a series of challenges successfully completed by the vehicle. Previous feats include a record-setting hill climb at Pikes Peak, the first-ever recorded crossing of the Arabian Peninsula’s ‘Empty Quarter’ desert, and the first ascent of the 999 steps to Heaven’s Gate in China.

The new Range Rover Sport brings a streamlined design

“Our latest Range Rover Sport embraces fully our modernist approach of vehicle design whilst amplifying its unquestionable sporting and confident character,” said Prof. Gerry McGovern OBE, Range Rover Chief Creative Officer.

Exterior

Still based on the Modular Longitudinal Architecture (MLA-Flex), the 2023 Range Rover Sport features a streamlined aesthetic with clean lines and taut surfaces throughout. Revised wraparound LED headlamps feature precise detailing, accompanied by a distinct signature on the daytime running lights. These flank the slim grille while transitioning to the muscular wheel arches.

A set of 23-inch alloy wheels make the midsize SUV even more distinctive than ever

Flush door handles and a rising waistline complement the floating roofline in creating a sleek profile, matched with 23-inch alloy wheels. The rear window glass is framed by the roof’s trailing edge and rear spoiler, with slimmer LED tail lamps on the redesigned tailgate. Angular tailpipes bookend the rear diffuser, giving the new SUV an even more crisp appearance.

Interior

The cabin on the new Range Rover Sport brings a welcoming and luxurious environment for up to five occupants. A new interpretation of Range Rover’s trademark Command Driving Position envelops the driver in a space of power, surrounded by the sweeping center console and high beltline. Second-row legroom and kneeroom have increased by 31mm and 17mm, respectively.

The cabin now features enhanced tech

Sustainable materials are the order of the day in the interior, with the sculpted seats draped in Lighweight Ultrafabrics apart from rich Windsor and soft semi-aniline leather options. Cabin Air Purification Pro with PM2.5 filtration and nanoe X technology filters out bacteria and allergens, even the virus that causes COVID-19.

Rear cargo space stands at a default 835 liters, expanding to 1,860 liters with the rear seats folded simply by pressing a button. Storage spaces on the main console area help keep small items such as wallets and sunglasses within easy reach of drivers.

Tech & Safety

Just beyond the steering wheel lies a 13.7-inch Driver Interactive Display, comprising a semi-floating high-definition screen that users can customize. A high-resolution head-up display projects information directly onto the driver’s line of sight.

Rear occupants get to enjoy increased leg- and kneeroom

A curved touchscreen with haptic controls runs the award-winning Pivi Pro infotainment system. At 13.1 inches, the monitor is the largest ever fitted on a Land Rover, with a near-frameless design giving the impression of a floating display on the dashboard. Wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto are standard along with over-the-air software updates and Amazon Alexa through the Online Pack.

The new Range Rover Sport's tech also has over-the-air software updates

All variants are fitted with advanced driver-assist systems such as a 3D Surround Camera, Emergency Braking, Wade Sensing, Lane Keep Assist, and Traffic Sign Recognition. A Driver Assist Pack brings Adaptive Cruise Control with Steering Assist, Rear Collision Monitor, Driver Condition Response, and Occupant Protection Assist.

Engine & Drivetrain

The 2023 Range Rover Sport offers a selection of six-cylinder powertrains in both mild-hybrid diesel and plug-in hybrid gasoline variants, the latter rated at 503 horsepower and 700 Nm of torque. Coming in 2023 are the gasoline mild-hybrid variants, accompanied by a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 capable of 523 horsepower and 750 Nm of twist.

New for 2023 is a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine

An re-engineered 8-speed twin-speed automatic transmission is linked to Land Rover’s Intelligent All-Wheel-Drive System. All-Wheel Steering delivers improved agility especially at high speeds, while the Dynamic Response Pro 48-volt electronic active roll control system applies up to 1,400 Nm of torque on the front and rear axles for greater control during cornering.
