The CX-5 made its debut as the first production Mazda carrying the Kodo design language in 2012. This was largely retained by the time its second generation premiered in 2016, and now the carmaker is tweaking the compact crossover even further as a 2022 model.
Mazda has launched a refreshed CX-5 for the 2022 model year
Leading the changes is a refreshed fascia that highlights a new signature wing, set against a revised grille that exchanges the old mesh pattern for a more three-dimensional look. The LED headlamps are now more distinctive than those on the current version with a revamped pattern, while the front lip is more streamlined, seemingly doing away with the LED foglamps.

For the range-topping Signature trim, the black exterior cladding all around has been rendered in body color. Revised LED taillamps now feature a more vertical light signature. Mazda also adds Zircon Sand to the palette of available colors for the CX-5. Inside, the crossover’s seats are reported to offer more support than before, going well with improved noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) levels on account of a more rigid chassis. Wireless charging now makes an appearance.

The refreshed CX-5 retains its 2.5-liter Skyactiv-G engine across the range, split into naturally aspirated and forced induction versions. Power output for the non-turbo is set at 187 horsepower and 252 Nm of torque, while the turbocharged version brings 227 horsepower and 434 Nm of twist. Both power plants are partnered with the same Skyactiv-Drive 6-speed automatic transmission, which Mazda says has now been retuned and is more responsive.
Where Sport mode used to be the only available performance setting on the CX-5, a new Mazda intelligent Drive Select (Mi-Drive) feature expands the available drive presets. What gets the boot is the front-wheel drivetrain option, as all CX-5 units will now come exclusively with all-wheel-drive.

With the enhancements to the CX-5, Mazda could be setting the stage for the next-generation model equipped with rear-wheel-drive and an inline-6 slated for a 2023 release. The 2022 Mazda CX-5 will initially be made available to North American and European markets, with pricing yet to be disclosed.
