It’s a facelift, but the changes are enormous.

Lately, it seems that Nissan is on a roll. A couple of days ago in Thailand, the Japanese brand introduced the new 2021 Nissan Navara. The said truck even got a new variant called the Pro-4X. A few days later, Nissan debuted the facelifted 2021 Nissan Terra as the X-Terra in the Middle East. Of note, this is the first time that this market has access to the said Navarra based SUV. Also, this launch serves as the facelifted Terra’s global debut.

Like the new Navara, the facelifted Terra/X-Terra bears the same design cues that are brought about by the “Nissan Next” initiative. While the upcoming 2021 Nissan 400Z is the Nissan Next’s poster boy, most of the Japanese marque’s cars including the Terra have and/or will be given a new look to make them sharper and more modern looking.

So what’s new with the facelifted 2021 Terra?

Exterior

From the get-go, the front end of the Middle-East-spec Terra definitely looks cleaner and sleeker than the older Nissan Terra. Mind you, the previous version looked macho, but this new one mixes the familiar muscularity of the old with the sharp and sleek direction of Nissan Next.

It looks a bit like the new Navara, but the new Terra does have some differences. For starters, the LED headlamps and LED daytime running lamps look similar to the new Nissan pickup truck, but the bumper is more seamlessly connected with the new, beefier skid plate. The faux-vents housing the fog lamps also look like they’re set lower.

Moreover, the new Navara’s V-motion grille has a top portion traveling over the top of the grille, whereas the one on the new Navara does not. Inside the facelifted Terra’s grille itself, it still has a mesh but it is now clad over with a very prominent set of chrome colored horizontal slats. And yes, it’s still very much a V-motion grille.

Towards the sides, it didn't change that much

The sides however didn’t change that much, but like most facelifted models, the new Terra gets a set of new  18-inch wheels. The rear also comes with a redesigned bumper, a new set of taillights, as well as new reflector lights. Up top, it also gets a shark-fin antenna and roof-racks.

Interior

As was shown by the leaked photos, the facelifted 2021 Nissan Navara gets a new dashboard. Gone is the “V-shaped” feature surrounding the array of controls as it had been replaced by a more contemporary looking, square-shaped housing. The re-arranged controls for the air-conditioning system also appears to be positioned further away from the infotainment system.

The round-shaped air-conditioning vents were also replaced by trapezoidal-like ones, which look more straightforward but are definitely sleeker. The gauge cluster housing also received the same treatment as it’s now more angular than ever before. The center console gets a redesign as well.

The most obvious change to the new Terra's interior, however, is the new flat-bottom steering wheel.

Other than that, the facelifted Terra still seats up to seven people. The top-variants also come with an eight-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as Bluetooth, USB, and AUX ports. The said infotainment system is then linked to an eight-piece Bose speaker system.

Passengers are kept comfortable with an automatic climate control system with rear vents. Loading cargo is also made easy with a power liftgate.

Of course, it's as spacious as the previous version

For the driver, the new Terra provides a manual tilting steering column, electronically adjustable seats, cruise control, a push to start button, offline navigation, automatic headlamps, power-folding side mirrors, parking sensors, a 360-degree camera, and a digital trip computer.

Powertrain

For the middle-eastern market, the Terra/X-Terra is propelled by a 2.5-liter DOHC inline-4 gasoline engine. It can deliver up to 165 horsepower and 241 Nm of torque. That's the sole engine option for the middle-eastern market, and it makes significantly less than the Philippine-spec Terra.

The Middle-Eastern Terra can come available as rear-wheel or four-wheel drive. The only transmission available in the said market is a seven-speed automatic. It also comes standard with a limited-slip differential.

It retains the good ol' body-on-frame chassis based on the Navara

Safety

For safety, the top-of-the-line Middle-Easter-spec 2021 Nissan Terra/X-Terra is equipped with anti-lock braking with electronic brake distribution, six-airbags, ISOFIX, an engine immobilizer, and a security alarm.

On the more active side, it also comes with a tire-pressure monitoring system, hill-start assist, lane-keep assist, stability and traction control, blind-spot detection, among others.

Price

The facelifted Terra, or rather the X-Terra for the Middle-eastern market comes with three variants. The entry-level variant called the X-Terra 2WD SE  is priced at USD 27,200.

The top-spec X-Terra 4WD Platinum variant on the other hand is priced at USD 36,500. Converted to current exchange rates, that’s a price range of Php 1,308,904 to Php 1,756,434 in Philippine Pesos. Keep in mind that taxes and other dues don’t apply here yet.

Final Thoughts

Surprisingly enough, Nissan decided to hold the global debut of the new Terra branded as the X-Terra in the Middle East. Many were expecting it to make its first appearance in Thailand.

Then again, the Middle East is a particularly huge market for Nissan made SUVs and SUVs in general. Case in point – the Nissan Patrol, which for years now, has been selling quite well in the region.

It is inevitable, however, that this facelifted 2021 Nissan Terra makes its way to the Philippine market. It’s proven after all that seven-seater models are particularly sought after in the local market.

There’s also the fact that the Terra, despite being a bit late to the local midsize SUV game, has also garnered its own set of staunch loyalists in the country. At most, however, we can expect the new Terra to arrive sometime around 2021.
