Toyota Vios still reigns as best-selling car in the Philippines

It’s dominating local sales for the fourth straight year.  

Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) showed that sedans still have a place in the domestic market, as its Vios subcompact sedan topped the sales charts not only within the brand’s stable of offerings, but across the local industry as well.

Citing recent sales figures, Autoindustriya reports that TMP sold 35,095 Vios units were sold to Filipino customers in 2021. This is quite a showing from 2020, when 25,290 examples rolled off Toyota dealerships. The Vios is currently on its fourth straight year of leading TMP’s sales.    

Coming in second place is the Hilux midsize pickup with 18,969 units going to satisfied owners. The Wigo small hatchback sold 17,491 units for 2021 to take third place in the rankings. This order is practically a repeat of TMP’s sales rankings for 2020

As TMP’s sales leader, the present Vios lineup comprises 10 variants, from the Base 1.3 manual to the top-spec 1.5 GR-S CVT. Two engine options are available across the range, delivering up to 106 horsepower and 140 Nm of torque. Higher-spec variants come with seven airbags, with a driver’s knee airbags offered as standard on all versions.

In total, seven Toyota models made the top 10 list of the country’s best-selling cars in 2021, contributing to the 294,223 units sold across all brands in the local market. The Innova MPV is at number four which sold 13,304 units, while the Fortuner midsize SUV sold 12,982 units for fifth place. 

The Rush mini SUV which went to the homes of 12,564 customers to take the sixth ranking, and the Hiace van taking up eighth place with 10,273 units sold.    

Meanwhile, two models from Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation (MMPC) managed to enter the top 10 as well. The Xpander MPV came with 11,342 units sold, serving as MMPC’s highest-selling model for 2021 and dislodging the Ford Ranger midsize pickup from the ranks of the top best-sellers.

This is followed by the L300 light commercial vehicle (LCV) with the keys handed over to 10,147 buyers, resulting in ninth place overall. Rounding up the top 10 is the Navara midsize pickup from Nissan, with 9,882 units sold.
