The capacity expansion of the Subic Freeport Expressway (SFEX), which runs through the provinces of Bataan and Zambales, is on track to be completed by the end of the year. NLEX Corporation says SFEX capacity expansion project is now 50 percent complete.

Once completed, the said Php 1.6-billion project aims to ease travel time to and from the Subic freeport zone through the two additional lanes in SFEX. The capacity expansion also includes two new spans at the Jadjad and Argonaut bridges, and a new tunnel adjacent to the existing one.
SFEX will also have new expressway-standard LED lights to make night driving safer. With this, NLEX Corp. is confident that traffic flow as well as overall road safety will significantly improve.
“By increasing the road capacity of SFEX, which traverses the provinces of Bataan and Zambales, transport of goods in and out of the Subic Freeport will be faster and easier. This would also mean that the expressway can accommodate more motorists at a given time,” said NLEX Corporation President and General Manager J. Luigi L. Bautista.

Bautista added that NLEX Corp. is working with the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) to raise the elevation of the Maritan Highway-Rizal and Highway-Tipo Road Junction. Moreover, the management is enhancing the drainage system to improve flood management in the area.
Of note, the construction of SFEX expansion started last September 2019 but it was put on hold due to the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ). Construction works resumed in mid-May as the ECQ was lifted.
Despite the setback caused by the coronavirus pandemic, NLEX Corp. is determined to finish the project by the end of the year. The SFEX expansion is also expected to sustain Subic’s position as a prime business and leisure hub.
