The next-generation Ford Ranger is just around the corner as far as the Australian market is concerned. But even before its official release, the model is already being hailed as a step up from the outgoing version, especially in terms of efficiency.
The upcoming new Ford Ranger is relatively thrifty, good news amid rising fuel prices
According to figures from the Australian federal government’s Green Vehicle Guide, the incoming fourth-generation pickup managed to do 14.5 kilometers per liter in combined city and highway driving.
This rating is specifically for the 2.0-liter inline-4 bi-turbo diesel power units with the 4x2 drivetrain and is consistent with data previously leaked online. The 4x4 variant returns a fuel efficiency rating of 13.8 kilometers per liter in mixed conditions.
For the new 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6 that will be available on volume-selling trim levels such as the XLT, Sport, and Wildtrak, consumption has been recorded at 12 kilometers per liter in combined driving.
Ranger Raptor buyers are willing to spend more on fuel in exchange for performance
Meanwhile, the range-topping new Ranger Raptor equipped with the 3.0-liter EcoBoost V6 returns 8.7 kilometers per liter when averaging urban and highway driving, ending up slightly thirstier than the current version which is rated at 12.2 kilometers on a single liter of gasoline. With the 80-liter fuel tank shared across the Ranger lineup, the incoming Ranger Raptor can theoretically log 695 kilometers between fuel stops.
Based on feedback across social media forums, Ranger Raptor buyers may be willing to compromise fuel economy for performance. The new version is capable of accelerating from zero to 100 kilometers per hour in under six seconds, according to internal tests conducted by Ford.
The new Ford Ranger is coming to our market soon
Overall, these figures give the upcoming Ranger a leg up over its market rivals. For instance, the Toyota Hilux running on the 2.8-liter turbodiesel with 4x4 drivetrain has been rated at between 11.9 to 12.6 kilometers per liter for the Australian market. The 4x4 Isuzu D-Max and Mazda BT-50, both with automatic transmissions, travel 12.5 kilometers per liter.
Ford Philippines is already accepting pre-orders for the next-generation Ranger, with the model scheduled for launch in the coming weeks. It comes with a starting price of Php 1,198,000.
