The Chery QQ is a familiar hatchback to Filipinos as it is offered by Chery Auto when it first came into the country over a decade ago. Chery Auto’s name was introduced in the local market in no time thanks to its affordable hatch. But when the brand re-entered the Philippines for the fourth time last 2019, it returned with Tiggo crossovers only.
Chery QQ Ice Cream
Amid Chery QQ’s absence in the country, the Chinese automaker is still making waves for it. The latest development for the hatchback is the unveiling of its new tiny electric vehicle (EV) version called Ice Cream.
No official specifications have been released by the car brand. But at least it gave the first look by releasing photos of the new EV version in a colorful Ice Cream camouflage. The Chery QQ Ice Cream showcases a boxy design with two doors only, redesigned headlights, and a small set of wheels.
A mini SUV entry from Chery?
Looking at the photos, it seems like Chery QQ Ice Cream will be rolled off as a mini SUV. It is still unclear whether this is a marketing strategy or the brand has somehow managed to equip the model with SUV-capable features. This will be answered once the EV hatch makes its debut. Chery Auto will start opening reservations on August 24 in China.
Once it is launched, the Chery QQ Ice Cream is expected to go head-to-head with the Wuling Hongguang Mini EV in China. The Wuling Hongguang Mini is one of the best-selling EVs in the Chinese market, closing a strong 29,143 sold units last month. It should be interesting to see how the new QQ Ice Cream will stack up against the top contender.
It sets to grow Chery Auto's EV market
As more car brands like Volkswagen are showing significant changes to adapt to the EV era, the introduction of the Chery QQ Ice Cream seems to be the right move for Chery Auto moving forward. The new EV version should help further prolong the lifespan of the nameplate in the brand’s lineup which started way back in 2003.
