Michelin Uptis flat-proof tire to enter production by 2024

Automotive technologies have been advancing year after year which shape the way we see modern cars. Even companies from other fields such as American tech company Apple are venturing into the car scene to provide inputs for in-car tech innovation. This will be beneficial once the industry turns into a pure electric vehicle (EV) market in the next decade or so.

However, some companies innovate not only in-car technologies, but vital components of a car including tires. Michelin is one of the front runners in advancing automotive tires. The latest product of the French tire company that is expected to change the game is its Uptis (or Unique Puncture-proof Tire System).

As the name suggests, the Michelin Uptis provides a puncture-proof feature thanks to its airless mechanism. But, this is not the first time the company revealed the airless tire. Last 2019, Michelin, in partnership with General Motors, presented the Uptis Prototype which was tested on the road first by a Chevrolet Bolt EV.

Two years later, Michelin announced that the Uptis will officially enter production by 2024, which is the proposed production year when it was first revealed. The Uptis will be providing sustainability, eco-friendly benefits, and durability as compared to the current tires offered in the market.

Michelin explained that around 200 million tires are scrapped every year due to tire flats and rapid pressure loss. That is an alarming number that can affect the environment badly if it continues. So with the use of an airless tire, the said number can go down significantly. Plus, 30 percent of the Uptis comes from recycled and sustainable materials.

It should be out in the market by 2024

Once the sales start by 2024, the Michelin Uptis will be considered a revolutionary piece in automotive history. Not only will it provide sustainability, but as well as safety as chances of a tire blowout will be gone with the wind.
