Maserati announced that its upcoming Grecale model will finally debut on March 22, 2022. This will be the Italian automaker’s entry to the compact luxury crossover category, slotting below its Levante midsize offering.
Maserati Grecale in Milan
The finalized launch date comes four months late from the original November 2021 world premiere. Although the delay resulted in plenty of disappointed customers, Maserati likely made the most out of it to fine-tune its latest offering, giving the model a better fighting chance against segment stalwarts such as the Porsche Macan, BMW X3, and Jaguar F-Pace.
Latest images from the automaker show the Grecale draped in a new light camouflage pattern as used by the Maserati Family Fleet, leaving little exterior details of the anticipated SUV to the imagination. The stark messaging reads “I’m the Maserati Grecale. I can’t tell you much more,” teasing fans of the brand.
Maserati is positioning the Grecale as a luxurious yet affordable offering
Consistent with that slogan, Maserati dispatched an accompanying press release online with many of the crucial details deliberately obscured. Despite this, the company makes its ambitions for the Grecale evident, positioning it as a luxurious model that can also be used on everyday drives.
References to the Levante are clear in the Grecale’s design, including the trademark side vents on the front fender and the Neptune Trident on the C-pillar. Another familiar detail is the fact that the Grecale will ride on the Giorgio platform, which also underpins other models under Stellantis such as the Jeep Grand Cherokee.
It will be built on a dedicated production line at the same plant where Alfa Romeo assembles the Stelvio and Giulia
Less evident are the range of powertrains to be used, although an all-wheel-drive layout is expected. A pure combustion variant will be standard, eventually accompanied by hybrid and full electric versions.
The Grecale will be assembled at the Cassino plant in Italy, where Maserati has reportedly invested around 800 million Euro (almost Php 46.6 billion) for a dedicated production line. Other vehicles currently built at the facility include the Giulia compact executive sedan and the Stelvio compact crossover, both from Maserati’s Stellantis teammate Alfa Romeo.
