Some buy Apple products for their image as status symbols, while others swear by the technological features that the Cupertino-based company has heavily invested on. Now that the Apple Watch Series 8 and iPhone 14 have been released, customers can add automotive safety to the mix.
Apple introduces Crash Detection on the entire iPhone 14 range
Apple says that the two devices offer a new feature called Crash Detection across the range. A new dual-core accelerometer measuring forces up to 256Gs and new high dynamic range gyroscope enable the iPhone 14 to detect if the user has just experienced a severe car crash. These work with the device’s built-in barometer, GPS, and microphone.
Linked to iPhone 14 are the Apple Watch Series 8, SE, and Ultra that will prompt the user to contact emergency services, automatically dialing if there is no response after a 10-second countdown. The smartwatch will also send out the user’s location that emergency responders can receive, as well as being shared to the user’s designated emergency contacts.

In addition, the iPhone 14 lineup comes with Emergency SOS via satellite, useful for when an accident occurs in an area with no cellular or Wi-Fi coverage. The device will ask several vital questions to assess the user’s condition and will guide them on where to point the phone to connect to the nearest satellite.
Answers to the initial questionnaire and follow-up messages will then be forwarded to Apple-trained specialists who can call for help on the user’s behalf. Users can also manually share their location via satellite. For now, this will be limited to users in the U.S. and Canada, free to use for two years.
The company is reinforcing its commitment to road safety
These features are typically built into premium cars, so it’s a marvel that they are now offered on more portable devices. These products can be seen as a clear sign that Apple is making a stronger commitment to road safety, which in turn is good news for the company’s customers and fans, especially those in our car-crazy country.
