Land Rover Defender raffle winner loses prize on the same day

The importance of reading the fine print.

It's not everyday that one’s name gets to be drawn for something as big as a brand-new Land Rover Defender, and that’s exactly what happened to one lucky winner in the Philippines. But the exhilaration at the news would be replaced by disappointment upon realizing that the prize wasn’t meant to be.

A silver Land Rover Defender 110 was offered as the grand prize in the 2021 Rockwell Christmas Car Raffle

A story which appeared on Inquirer Mobility tells of such an instance. For the 2021 Rockwell Christmas Car Raffle, Power Plant Mall offered customers the chance to win a shiny new Land Rover Defender 110 in Hakuba Silver, valued at Php 6.5 million.

The promo mechanics stated that shoppers only needed to spend between Php 1,000 and Php 3,000 at select retailers from November 25, 2021 to January 31, 2022. Each purchase entails a Christmas Raffle code, which should be entered into the Rockwellist mobile app to qualify as a raffle ticket.

It sounds like an easier way of getting a coveted premium SUV, rather than bothering with bank loans or doing some creative accounting just to get the needed funds. The raffle draw held on February 1, livestreamed by the mall over Facebook, yielded one winner who was presumably overjoyed at her unbelievable luck.

The mall management reiterated an important part of the promo's mechanics

Except that the euphoria would be cut short with the revelation that the winner’s husband works for one of the mall’s tenants, a fact eventually confirmed by a post-event check. Under the promo’s rules, those employed by Rockwell Malls, its service providers, and tenants are ineligible to join the raffle. This extends to their relations up to the second degree of consanguinity.

Her ticket was invalidated as a result. Eventually, Power Plant Mall announced that the Land Rover Defender grand prize will again be raffled off in a livestreamed event over its Facebook page on Sunday, February 6, 2022, at 3:00 p.m.

If it weren’t for that gaffe, the draw would have been more impressive since the winner only had a single raffle entry to her name. Too bad the opportunity slipped away just as easily. It goes to show just how important it is to always read the fine print, whether you’re buying a car or hoping to win one.
