This marks the final time that diesel will be under the Wrangler’s hood.

Diesel has always been a typical choice for SUVs, but with electrification gathering the proverbial steam, the writing’s on the wall for the torquey powertrain. Jeep recognizes this, delivering a fitting send-off for its Wrangler’s diesel era with the Rubicon FarOut.

As the last appearance of diesel power on the Wrangler, the Rubicon FarOut goes all-out

“At Jeep, we are always listening to our customers and driven to improve our legendary 4x4 capability,” said Jim Morrison, Senior Vice President and Head of Jeep brand North America. “The Wrangler Rubicon FarOut special edition is our tip to the hat to the EcoDiesel on Wrangler.”

The exclusive trim level will be the swan song for the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 as far as the Wrangler is concerned, although the power unit will still be offered on the pickup-bodied Jeep Gladiator. Introduced for the 2020 model year, the engine is rated at 260 horsepower and 600 Nm of torque.

The EcoDiesel V6 engine has been powering the Jeep Wrangler since 2020

But as the last diesel-powered Wrangler is going out on a last hurrah, there are other things to expect. A ‘Diesel 3.0L’ hood graphic and exclusive ‘3.0 D’ badging will be offered as standard, along with a satin black grille, LED exterior lighting, and body-color fenders housing unique 17-inch alloy wheels.

Occupants will be treated to heated black leather seats with red accents as part of the Cold Weather package, complementing all-weather floor mats. It will also come with the Trailer-Tow and Heavy-Duty Electrical Group, including an upgraded alternator and battery plus trailer towing hardware such as tow hitch receivers and 4- or 7-pin outlets.

A Rock-Trac 4x4 system makes crawling over rocks a piece of cake

Also offered straight from the assembly line are third-generation Dana 44 front and rear heavy-duty axles, a 3.73 axle ratio, and a Rock-Trac 4x4 two-speed transfer case packing a 4.0:1 low-range gearing. A Safety Group package brings driver-assist technologies such as Forward Collision Warning, Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross Path Detection, and Adaptive Cruise Control.

With the diesel’s exit, Jeep will still offer the Wrangler in gasoline powertrain options, including the mainstay 3.6-liter V6, 6.4-liter V8, 2.0-liter turbo, and the 4xe plug-in hybrid. Customers can place their orders for the 2023 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon FarOut by November 2022, with deliveries expected within the fourth quarter of the year.
