A prototype has been spotted ahead of its EV brand launch next year.

Chinese automaker BYD is rumored to be developing its own contender in the electric pickup segment as a test mule has been sighted on public roads.

Automotive website Inside EVs cites an unofficial media report from China’s Yiche auto media outlet as saying that BYD could be preparing its battery electric and plug-in hybrid pickup for a 2023 launch. This was followed by an update from local tech media Mydrivers showing an image of the camouflaged pickup, purported to be BYD’s prototype.

While the more intricate details of the vehicle are covered by camouflage, what is readily apparent is that this is a four-door vehicle with two seating rows, followed by a rather small cargo bed. More rumors hint at BYD targeting a price range of between $55,800 and $83,700 (Php 3.17 million to Php 4.75 million).

The reports and sighting come in the wake of BYD’s announcement that it will launch its own Yangwang premium EV brand by 2023 in direct competition to U.S. tech firm Tesla, which is preparing to launch the Cybertruck next year. This could also be BYD’s answer to fellow Chinese automaker Geely which recently launched its RD6 electric pickup under the Radar Auto marque.

Yangwang’s initial offering, a luxury off-road electric vehicle, is also undergoing tests on public roads. Unconfirmed reports suggest that it will have a body-on-frame platform and will be offered as both an electric and plug-in hybrid model, with a rumored output of 650 horsepower and four-wheel-drive capability.

The Chinese automaker could be preparing for a showdown against Tesla's anticipated Cybertruck

The new line of EVs under the Yangwang name could offer endless customization options for the buyer. BYD Chairman Wang Chuanfu said that the brand will focus on what customer’s want and offer tailor-made solutions.

Data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) indicate that the pickup segment is growing in China, with sales of 41,000 units in October this year alone. This counts 15,697 from Great Wall Motor, 6,217 from SAIC Maxus, and 4,187 from JAC.
