It features a more aggressive look than the outgoing model.

Toyota’s Wigo small hatchback has had to make do so far with two facelifts to its name. Now, the model’s second generation has been teased in a series of images from Malaysia, where it will be introduced as the all-new Axia by local automaker Perodua.

This will more or less be what the second-generation Toyota Wigo will look like

Customers can expect substantial changes for the new release, beginning with the chassis as the upcoming Wigo will ride on the Daihatsu New Global Architecture (DNGA) platform. This puts it within the league of its Raize, Rush, and Avanza corporate siblings.

In terms of design, the fascia features LED headlamps that are more horizontal in their orientation, flanking a larger grille. The corners of the front bumper have also been upsized, featuring LED fog lamp strips in lieu of the previous round lighting units, accompanied by front sensors.

Upgraded door handles give the new Wigo an upmarket feel, while the enlarged rear glass sits on a redesigned hatch that sits between revamped LED tail lamps. Additional sensors can be found on the streamlined rear bumper.

The tailgate handle has been relocated closer to the rear glass

A revised interior greets occupants with a restyled dashboard and digital instrumentation, as the in-dash touchscreen display is replaced by a 9-inch floating-type monitor. There’s even a dual-camera setup mounted on the windshield that’s reportedly part of an advanced driver-assist system.

The new Wigo is expected to carry over the 1.0-liter gasoline engine powering the current model, rated at 67 horsepower and 91 Nm of torque. But the real story for the powertrain is that the 4-speed automatic gearbox has been left out in favor of a Dual-Mode CVT, reportedly the world’s first split-gear CVT system that features both belt and gear drive.

No more torque converter automatics on the upcoming new Wigo

Those in love with small cars will note that the next Toyota Wigo makes its global premiere as the all-new Perodua Axia on Valentine’s Day, February 14 in Malaysia. No official prices have been released yet, although the model is reported to start at MYR 36,800 (around Php 470,000), with the top-spec variant having a sticker price of MYR 49,500 (Php 632,000).
