Toyota Wigo 2020: Toyota shows the boys how to do small cars

Since the mid-2000s, in the midst of the international oil crisis, SUVs and traditional sedans fell down the wayside to give way to more fuel-efficient mini sub-compact hatchbacks. We saw the likes of Kia and Hyundai flex their wares and experience a renaissance of sorts and dominated the sales charts with their offerings.

They may seem a tad late to the party but Toyota, owning a major stake in manufacturer, Daihatsu releases their own version of a mini-subcompact hatch and absolutely nails it right in the head.

Toyota Wigo 2020: Don't’ call the Wigo “Cute”

Toyota Wigo 2020 sports a more chiseled countenance compared to its peers. Instead of going the “cute” route they opted for a sportier and more masculine look with angry-looking headlights and a hint of an aero kit for the front. The large front grille is complemented by an aero inspired front chin and large round headlamps.

The side body panels are devoid of any drama except for a slight hint of wheel arches. You get design continuity with the rear hatch as it matches the garish design of the front fascia with a top-mounted rear spoiler and knob-like, Nintendo-button tail lamps. Overall it differs itself from the pack by avoiding the Pokemon cutesy look.

Toyota Wigo 2020: Space is relative

You get ample room inside the cabin for 4 people, 5 in a pinch and 6 for clown car mode. The “lean-your-arm-against-the-window test” failed me as the door panels were fairly thin, which is up to par, really for mini hatches. It has spaced out on the back for a week's worth of groceries, and nothing more.

Interior amenities are top-notch with a well-built cabin and contrasting colored seats. Safety has not taken a back seat either with all models sporting Anti-lock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution to go with dual airbags and a reinforced body shell for impact protection.

Toyota Wigo 2020: Value-Packed Motoring

There may be more affordable cars for sale in this segment, or maybe even more advanced or more powerful offerings from other car manufacturers but the one they can’t hold a candle against the Toyota Wigo is resale value. Traditionally Toyotas can withstand inflation much better than other brands and the Wigo is no exception.

This is a plus if you want to enjoy your Toyota Wigo and have to sell it one day for an upgrade. Parts are plentiful as well with Factory OEM parts and third-party sellers having them on hand at all times.

The Toyota Wigo also sips fuel like a miser despite its old-school 4-speed automatic transmission but power is effectively spread at the bottom of the rev range giving it a real-world city fuel economy of 11km/l. Price starts at P557,000 for the base model making it easy to own as well.
