Toyota officially revealed the 2022 GR 86 that features a whole new platform. Like its Subaru BRZ sibling, the new Toyota GR 86 also gets a new engine and a revamped exterior design.
Its name even changed from Toyota 86 to Toyota GR 86 to signify that it’s a model under the Toyota Gazoo Racing department.
So just how different is the new Toyota GR 86 from its predecessor? Let's find out with this old versus new comparison.
Obviously, the new GR 86 has a lot of changes
2022 Toyota 86 Old vs New: Exterior
One of the most notable changes to the new GR 86 is its size. It now has an overall length of 4,265 mm, and its wheelbase is now at 2,575 mm.
The older Toyota GT 86, on the other hand, has a length of 4,240 mm, and a wheelbase length of 2,570 mm. This means that the new model is longer.

The new GR 86 is also a bit shorter as compared to the old model. On the other hand, the outgoing 86 is 10 mm taller from the ground while the width remains the same at 1,775 mm.
Lastly, when it comes to dimensions, the new GR 86 now has more ground clearance at 130 mm, whereas the old model has 124 mm.
Compare these two models from the side
In terms of exterior styling, the 2022 Toyota GR 86 features some drastic changes. It gained a sharper set of LED headlights with LED daytime running lights, a wider grille, and some functional vents positioned on either side of the front fascia.
The aforementioned vents then lead to exit points found on the side of the car. The rear gets a trunk-mounted ducktail spoiler as well. Toyota said that these features were added to provide the car better aerodynamics. All of these are of course absent on the old model.
Which model looks better from the rear?
For the Japan-spec model that was shown during the virtual launch, it rides on larger 18-inch wheels that come with a spoked design similar to the old 86’s 17-inch set.
The new set, however, is colored black. Also, some trim pieces found on the front and rear end are black. Even the side mirrors are colored in black. In comparison, most versions of the outgoing 86 come with two-tone side mirrors. It also has fewer exterior black-colored trim pieces.
Of note, the cladding surrounding the dual-exhaust tips looks more prominent than the older version. Toyota also got rid of the triangular rear fog lamp in favor of a rectangular one.
2022 Toyota 86 Old vs New: Interior
Inside, the 2022 Toyota GR 86 looks similar to the outgoing model. The position of the touchscreen unit remains the same, there’s still a lot of contrast red trims and stitching, and the round air-conditioning vents can still be seen.
The new model’s dashboard now looks flatter compared to the previous model. Even the center air-conditioning vents are now rectangular in shape. The positioning of some of the controls, particularly the push-to-start button, was also redesigned for better reach.

And lastly, the new GR 86 will still be able to seat four. For now, we are unsure if the space for the rear seats has been improved.
2022 Toyota 86 Old vs New: Tech and Safety
For the new GR 86, Toyota got rid of the old analog gauge cluster in favor of a new digital one. The touchscreen infotainment system also looks larger, but Toyota is yet to confirm its exact size.
Like its Subaru BRZ sibling, the automatic versions of the 2022 Toyota GR 86 will come with EyeSight Driver Assist Technology. This safety suite includes pre-collision safety, collision avoidance, among others.
2022 Toyota 86 Old vs New: Engine
Under the hood, the 2022 Toyota GR 86 uses a 2.4-liter naturally aspirated boxer-four engine. The old 86 uses the same type of engine, but its displacement is smaller at just 2.0-liters.
As a result, the new GR 86 makes more power. It can produce up to 232 horsepower and 250 Nm of torque. Compare that to the old 86, which can make 197 horsepower and 205 Nm of torque. Both the old and new 86 are rear-wheel-drive, and both may also come with a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission.
The new 86 is reportedly more aerodynamic than the outgoing model
The old and new model’s suspension types also remain unchanged. Both still use a MacPherson strut-type front suspension, and a double-wishbone type suspension for the rear.
At this point, Toyota is yet to release further details on the 2022 GR 86, especially regarding its interior features. The Japanese company also hasn’t released the new model’s pricing even for the Japanese market which is getting the new model first. For now, we’ll have to wait until the new Toyota GR 86 is made available sometime in September of this year.
