1. 2020 Toyota Innova 2.0 E Gas AT vs Maxus G50 AT Premium: Battle of the MPVs

The MPV has been one of the most dominant vehicle classes here in the Philippines. MPVs are versatile, practical, and offers a seating capacity of seven or eight. By now, you know that the top dog in terms of MPVs available locally is the Toyota Innova. Everywhere you go you’ll see one, and we’re even confident in saying that two out of ten people reading this article might have ridden on one or drove one before. Many of you might even be Innova owners.

This year, however, Maxus Philippines released the Maxus G50 MPV. It is large, classy, well-equipped, and powerful. With those things, it seems that it is seeking to make a huge splash in the local MPV market.

So, how does the Maxus G50 AT Premium fare against the similarly priced Toyota Innova 2.0 E Gas AT? Well, here’s a spec sheet comparison to help you find out.

2. 2020 Toyota Innova 2.0 E Gas AT vs Maxus G50 AT Premium: Exterior

In terms of dimensions, the Toyota Innova E is a bit wider and taller than the Maxus G50. On the other hand, the G50 is longer as compared to Toyota’s MPV. The Innova E is 4,735 mm long, 1,830 mm wide, and 1795 mm high. It also has a wheelbase length of 2,750 mm.

In comparison, the Maxus G50 is 90 mm longer at 4,825 mm. It also has a longer wheelbase at 2,800 mm. The G50’s width measures at 1,825 mm and has a height of 1,778 mm.

For exterior amenities, the G50 AT Premium is better equipped. It comes with automatic LED headlamps, daytime running lamps (DRL), 17-inch alloy wheels, and a power tailgate.

The Innova E is much more Spartan with its multi-reflector halogen lamps, and a smaller set of 16-inch alloy wheels. It also lacks DRL and the power tailgate found on the Maxus MPV.

While both MPVs can fit eight people, the Maxus G50 AT Premium has more interior amenities. Its 12.3-inch touchscreen is more advanced, and it even has wireless charging.

The entertainment system is then connected to a six-piece speaker system. Its seats are also clad in leather. Moreover, the G50 has keyless entry with a push to start button, a multifunction steering wheel, power-adjustable front seats, and cruise control.

The Innova E is simpler with its 2-DIN entertainment system, but it can handle CD/Radio/MP3, as well as connect to a phone via USB and AUX jack. Innova E’s 2-DIN unit is also linked to six speakers.

This variant of the Toyota made MPV gets fabric seats which do have the same 60:40 split as the Maxus G50. The G50’s second-row however does have a center armrest, which the Innova E lacks. Note however that all Innova variants come with a tilt and telescopic adjustable steering column.

In terms of air-conditioning systems, the one aboard the Maxus G50 is automatic, while the one aboard the Innova E is manual. Both however do have rear vents.

The top-of-the-line Innova V however does come with a better touchscreen infotainment system with navigation. It’s also equipped with electronically adjustable captain seats for the second-row, an electronically adjustable driver’s seat, smart entry with a push to start button, and ambient lighting.

When it comes to engines, all variants of the Maxus G50 use a 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-4 gasoline engine. It can make up to 169 horsepower and 250 Nm of torque.

A seven-speed dual-clutch transmission sends power to the front wheels. For suspensions, the G50 uses MacPherson struts for the front and a torsion beam type suspension for its rear. And lastly, it uses disc brakes all around.

Overall, the Toyota Innova has two engine options and two transmission options. There’s the 2.0-liter gasoline mill found on the E and J variants. It makes 136 horsepower and 183 Nm of torque. 

There’s also a more powerful 2.8-liter diesel mill that generates 171 horsepower and 360 Nm of torque if paired with the six-speed automatic transmission.

On the other hand, if the 2.8-liter diesel engine is paired with a five-speed manual, the said engine makes a bit less at 167 horsepower and 343 Nm of torque. The Innova’s gasoline 2.0-liter engine also uses a six-speed automatic or five-speed manual.

The multi-link rear suspension that the Innova uses is definitely more advanced.

All variants of the Innova uses a double-wishbone suspension for the front and a 4-link suspension with coil springs for the rear. For brakes, the entire Innova variant lineup uses ventilated discs for the front, and drum brakes for the rear.

5. 2020 Toyota Innova 2.0 E Gas AT vs Maxus G50 AT Premium: Safety

For safety, the Innova E is equipped with dual front airbags, as well as a driver’s knee airbag. It also comes with anti-lock braking with electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD).

The Maxus G50 is more generous when it comes to safety. It has side airbags on top of its dual front airbags, it also has anti-lock braking with EBD, stability control, an engine immobilizer, a security alarm, and rear parking sensors.

As we’ve mentioned before with regards to interior amenities, the high-spec Innova variants can also match the G50 in terms of safety equipment. The top-of-the-line Innova V even comes with seven airbags, stability control, hill-start assist, and brake assist. Do note though that the Innova V is significantly more expensive than the G50 and the Innova E.

2020 Toyota Innova 2.0 E Gas AT vs Maxus G50 AT Premium: Conclusion

It is obvious that the Chinese made Maxus G50 is out for blood. Its array of interior amenities, its more powerful engine, plus its variant’s prices were specifically positioned and designed to effectively compete against its segment rivals such as the Toyota Innova.

While many of the Innova variants that are similarly priced to the G50 lack a bit in features, the Innova does have several advantages.

First, it’s been around since 2004, which means Toyota has had time to refine the platform. Second, the Innova has a sizable array of variants available in an equally wide array of price points. From the simple and utilitarian Innova J to the luxurious Innova V, one can say there’s an Innova for everyone.

And lastly, one cannot ignore the massive Toyota dealership network here in the Philippines. That means that its after-sales services are very accessible.

The Innova, on the other hand, is a market veteran with a proven record

As for the Maxus G50, it’s got all the things that might be able to make it a hit. It’s still new to the market though, we’ll just have to wait and see if it makes a mark.
