4 small MPV alternatives to the Mitsubishi Xpander

Updated Nov 19, 2021

Here are the other four valued-packed MPVs you can get under P1-million.

Needless to say, the Xpander definitely rocked the automotive industry when it was first introduced in 2018.

The Mitsubishi Xpander is the soul successor of the Mitsubishi Adventure that Filipinos have all grown up with, and we must say, the Japanese automaker did an excellent job with the passage.

The Mitsubishi Xpander can offer various features that can instantly set the MPV apart from its competition. Starting off with its relatively affordable Xpander price Philippines, the base Xpander variant starts at Php 999,000 and goes up to Php 1,175,000.

The Xpander is also incredibly stylish that makes it instantly recognizable on the streets.

We can only imagine how far the Xpander can go in the upcoming years

Under the hood, the Mitsubishi Xpander uses a reliable and dependable 1.5-liter MIVEC engine that produces 103 hp at 6,000 rpm and 141 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm.

Moreover, it comes with seven seats and a ground clearance measured at 205 mm and that makes the Xpander an incredibly versatile MPV.

However, if you are unsure about the Xpander or you somehow still feel like the Xpander is a bit too much for the budget, then we have listed six alternative MPVs you can get that can go head to head with the Mitsubishi nameplate.

Of note, we are highly considering the price points of the following MPVs as we are avoiding to provide high-riding MPV alternatives to the Mitsubishi Xpander like the Mitsubishi Xpander Cross, Toyota Rush, Honda BR-V, and the Suzuki XL7.

Honda Mobilio (Php 895,000 – Php 1,085,000)

Not only will the Honda Mobilio offer competitive performance figures, but also a stylish and sporty finish on the outside as all Honda cars are known for.

Powering the Honda Mobilio is a 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine that produces 120 hp at 6,600 rpm and 145 Nm of torque at 4,600 rpm.

The RS variant offers a sportier appeal

Even in the interior, Honda still managed to keep a sporty look for the Mobilio thanks to its all-black ergonomically designed roomy interiors.  And just like the Xpander, the Honda Mobilio also comes with seven seats for all variants.

Both these giant Japanese automakers have done an excellent job designing an MPV fit for the local market. Considering the Xpander and the Mobilio features that are almost relatively identical, it just comes down to you if you are a fan of Honda or Mitsubishi.

Toyota Avanza (Php 743,000 – Php 1,077,000)

The Toyota Avanza may not have the sporty-like design the Mitsubishi Xpander possess, but the Avanza will surely get the job done efficiently.

Since introduction in the country in 2006, the Toyota Avanza has been a favorite among Filipino car buyers who are looking for an affordable MPV.

If you want to get your hands on a Toyota, you might want to start with this

Under the hood, both the Toyota Avanza and the Mitsubishi Xpander share almost the same performance figures. The Toyota Avanza is powered by a 1.5-liter dual VVT-i inline 4 engine that produces 103 hp and 136 Nm of torque.

The reason why the Avanza is the 8th best-selling Toyota in 2019 and the top-selling MPV in the country is because of its interior space with space to spare for cargo.

By just looking from the outside, the Toyota Avanza gives the impression that it is a spacious family car.

Lastly, both the Toyota Avanza and the Mitsubishi Xpander have the same ground clearance at 200 mm. This just solidifies the Toyota Avanza’s image of an MPV that gets the job done efficiently.

Suzuki Ertiga (Php 738,000 – Php 988,000)

Another MPV that can compete with the Mitsubishi Xpander in terms of overall style is the Suzuki Ertiga.

The greatest factor the Ertiga can offer is its affordable price point. In fact, the Suzuki Ertiga is the most affordable MPV that can relatively compete with the Mitsubishi Xpander.

Despite having an affordable price point that starts at Php 738,000 only, the Suzuki Ertiga still offers seven seats. The Suzuki Ertiga may not possess a stylish interior just like the Mitsubishi Xpander, but the MPV can still seat passengers comfortably even in long journeys.

The Ertiga is a top car choice when looking for an affordable 7-seater car

Under the hood, the Mitsubishi Xpander bested the Suzuki Ertiga by 3 Nm of torque only. The Suzuki Ertiga uses a 1.5-liter K15B capable of producing 103 hp at 6,000 rpm and 138 Nm of torque at 4,400 rpm. The engine is paired to either a 4-speed automatic transmission or a 5-speed manual transmission.

As for safety features, the Suzuki Ertiga comes in as a really strong competitor in the local MPV segment for its price.

The Suzuki Ertiga comes with an anti-lock braking system (ABS) with electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD), brake assist, SRS front dual airbags, AT shift lock/key interlock, rear parking sensors, and reverse camera.

BAIC M60 (Php 998,000 – Php 1,068,000)

Among all MPVs the BAIC is offering locally, the M60 is the closest competition for the Mitsubishi Xpander that comes at a more affordable price point.

In fact, some may suggest that the BAIC M60 is a better MPV alternative to the Mitsubishi Xpander.

Starting off with the performance figures, the BAIC M60 produces more power than the Mitsubishi Xpander thanks to its 1.5-liter turbocharged DOHC inline-4 gasoline engine capable of producing 147 hp at 6,000 rpm and 210 Nm of torque at 4,500 rpm. The engine is paired to a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

Do you think it has what it takes to compete against the Xpander?

The BAIC M60 is also larger than the Mitsubishi Xpander in terms of length and width with 4,800 mm and 1,824 mm, respectively. However, the BAIC M60 only has a 161 mm ground clearance while the Mitsubishi Xpander has a larger 200 mm ground clearance.

If we’ll look at the spec sheets, we can say that both the Mitsubishi Xpander and the BAIC M60 are good MPV choices with good and similar features for their price tags.

Again, it is a matter of preference as to whether you would go for a Japanese car brand that is recognized globally for the right reasons or a promising Chinese car brand that offers valued-packed MPVs, CUVs, SUVs, vans, and light trucks.
