Volvo’s flagship sedan, the S90, is the brand’s entry into the midsize premium sedan segment. The perfect blend of Scandinavian aesthetic, advanced safety technology, and cloud-based features places the modern luxury sedan a notch above its competitors. Its striking design philosophy won the coveted 2015 Production Car Design of the Year award. Matched with Volvo’s pristine reputation in the safety engineering department, the S90 has become one of the brand’s most iconic products. Locally, the model is offered in two variants which are the Volvo S90 2.0 D4 AT and the Volvo S90 T8 Plug-in Hybrid. The former is a diesel-powered 2.0L engine while the latter comes with the latest hybrid, gasoline and electric motor engine.
Launch
The Volvo S90 was first introduced in mid-2016 and was launched to the Philippine automotive market in October of the same year. A couple of years later, a hybrid version of the S90 was released in April 2019.

Exterior
Volvo’s S90 embodies the iconic Scandinavian design at its most elegant yet athletic stance. With clean lines, dominant proportions, and intricately curated details, the luxury sedan is an absolute looker on the road. The front fascia is a strong representation of Volvo's design language, flanked with narrow LED head lamps and T-shaped LED daytime running lights. Its wide grille is styled with vertical slats, holding the iconic Volvo emblem front and center. The S90 rides on 18-inch alloy wheels that complete its look.
Interior
Volvo’s commitment to excellence is incredibly evident in its interior. Matching the façade’s aesthetic is a cabin that embodies careful attention to detail, high-quality materials, and a minimalist styling. The Volvo S90 creates a unique feeling of modern Swedish luxury.
Among its plethora of exquisite details is the Orrefors crystal and Linear Walnut trim. Comfort Seats are upholstered in premium leather with exceptional support, power adjustability, and plenty of legroom. The straightforward center console and dashboard provide a sense of sophistication in its clean design. Completing the interior ambiance is a sunroof that adds natural light.
Technology & Safety Features
On the center of the Volvo S90’s cabin is a 5-inch digital display with Sensus Connect touchscreen in portrait format. The digital display provides all the necessary information right in front of the driver for convenience. For enhanced safety, the screen automatically adjusts its brightness based on the surrounding light conditions. The infotainment system can be activated through voice control which will enable to driver to easily operate climate control, navigation, entertainment features, and smart phones. It is capable of connectivity through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The Volvo S90 is also packed with augmented, modernized safety features that include Electronic Brake Distribution, Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), Stability Control, Lane Departure Warning System, Blind-Spot Detection System, Cruise Control, Front and Rear Parking Sensors, and Tire Pressure Monitoring as standard.
The top-range variant comes with more advanced supplementary features such as City Safety which looks out for potential danger through a 360˚ Camera, and Steering Support that helps in mitigating a collision. Lastly, it comes with Pilot Assist which can reduce the effort required when driving in heavy traffic.
Platform & Chassis
The Volvo S90 is based on the same Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) as the XC90. Suspension of the 4-door sedan comes in the form of Independent upper and lower arms for the front and independent multi-link for the rear. Stopping power comes from disc brakes all around.
Engine & Drivetrain
There are two engine options for the S90. The base S90 2.0 D4 AT variant is powered by a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder Turbocharged diesel engine (T6) that produces 109 hp and 400 Nm of torque. Meanwhile, the top-spec Volvo S90 T8 Plug-in Hybrid is furnished with a 2.0-liter turbocharged and supercharged inline-4 gasoline mill paired to an electric motor (T8 Plug-in Hybrid) that spews out 407hp and 640Nm of torque. Both engines are mated to an 8-Speed Geartronic Automatic Transmission that sends power to the front wheels and all wheels, respectively.
