As the country’s top carmaker, it is inevitable for Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) to be asked which of its models were purchased the most during the preceding year. For 2021, TMP’s top three sales achievers are the Vios, Hilux, and Wigo, the same positions they held in 2020.
The Vios is on its four-year streak as Toyota Motor Philippines' sales leader
Wearing the carmaker’s sales crown since 2018, the Vios subcompact sedan finished 2021 with 35,095 units sold. This was followed by the Hilux midsize pickup in second place with 18,969 satisfied customers, while the Wigo small hatchback came in at number three with 17,491 units rolling off the showrooms.
This was practically a repeat of TMP’s sales rankings for 2020, the first year of the pandemic. The company managed to sell 25,290 units of the Vios, 13,637 units of the Hilux, and 11,853 units of the Wigo to Filipino buyers back then, out of a total of 99,545 units.

Toyota’s local sales figures for 2021 were significantly better at 129,099 units, almost meeting its sales target of 130,000. Among the carmaker's other models that have contributed to this figure are the Innova MPV with 13,304 units purchased, the Fortuner midsize SUV with 12,982 examples bought, and the Rush mini SUV which reached 12,564 satisfied customers.
2021 saw the local launch of the Hilux GR Sport variant
The GR Yaris hot hatch also made the list with 138 units driven off the showrooms, despite only being introduced last year. Even the Supra sports coupe managed to sell 47 units, an improvement over the 32 purchased by customers in 2020. The FJ Cruiser midsize SUV, despite being a phased-out model in Japan, still reached sales of 280 units in 2021, up from 208 in 2020.
The Prius hybrid is on its third straight year of being passed over at dealerships
Meanwhile, not a single unit of the Prius hybrid earned the attention of customers, with 2021 as the third straight year that the model has been languishing in showrooms. Far from being a rejection of sustainable mobility, it could just be a sign that car buyers prefer electrified vehicles with more mainstream looks such as the hybrid versions of the Corolla Altis, Corolla Cross, and Camry.
