The Department of Transportation (DOTr) announced that the Common Station will be completed within this month.
Common Station, also known as Unified Grand Central Station, is a new railway station located in North Edsa, Quezon City. It will interconnect the Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1), the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3), the Metro Rail Transit Line 7 (MRT-7), and the Metro Manila Subway.
The DOTr acknowledged that the infrastructure project had a delay of eight years. But regardless, the agency couldn’t be more proud of the upcoming opening, especially considering that it will improve the lives of Filipino commuters.
“After eight years of delay, the Common Station is expected to be completed this June with the remainder of the project now in full, accelerated construction pace,” said DOTr in a press statement.
While the LRT-1 and MRT-3 have been serving commuters for a long time, the MRT-7 and Metro Manila Subway have yet to be inaugurated. The MRT-7 is a 22.8-km railway network that connects Quezon City and San Jose Del Monte in Bulacan. As of May 2022, this project is reported to be at 63 percent completion.
The Common Station will improve railway operations in Metro Manila
On the other hand, the Metro Manila Subway is a mega infrastructure project that is targeted to provide a subway network to Filipinos. It is a 36-km long subway that will be marked as the first mass underground transport system in the country, connecting Quezon City and NAIA Terminal 3.
The Unified Grand Central Station is expected to accommodate up to 500,000 passengers per day. To further improve the services of the new station, the DOTr noted that it will be built with a terminal that is available with various public land transport vehicles.
“There will also be an intermodal integrated system below, allowing leaving passengers of the Common Station to depart by bus, jeepney, or taxi conveniently,” added DOTr.
