As a refresher, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) implemented safeguard duties on imported passenger cars (PCs) and light commercial vehicles (LCVs) last January 2021. This is enacted to support the local automotive industry as more jobs are lost due to the rising imported vehicles in the country.

Under the safeguard duty, imported PCs are added with Php 70,000 per unit, while imported LCVs get Php 110,000 per unit. The prices go up to Php 78,400 for imported PCs and Php 123,200 for imported LCVs after including value-added tax (VAT) of 12 percent.
