Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) announced that it reached a cumulative global production total of 300 million cars, including production numbers, for September 2023. The Japanese automaker continues to strengthen its title as the best-selling car brand in the world.
It was 88 years ago when Toyota produced its very first car, the Model G1 truck, at the Automotive Production Division of Toyoda Automatic Loom Works, Ltd. in August 1935. The automaker produced 180.52 million in its homeland Japan and 119.6 million in global markets.
The Toyota Corolla remains the brand’s best-selling model – which is now on its 12th-generation iteration. It has even evolved today with the Corolla Cross, addressing the growing market demand for SUVs/crossovers. As of the end of September 2023, the nameplate produced a cumulative global production of 53.399 million.
For the coming years, we can expect to see more electric vehicle (EV) models ramp up the brand’s production numbers. Toyota gave a glimpse of its electric future at the Japan Mobility Show with concepts like the FT-Se GR sports car and Land Cruiser Se.
"Kiichiro Toyoda said, 'Carmaking is something everyone does together.' I think this number of 300 million stands as proof of all the hard work, every day, of our colleagues at Toyota, our suppliers and dealers, and all the many other stakeholders, as well as all those who came before us,” said Toyota Chairman and Master Driver Akio Toyoda.
“I want to offer my heartfelt gratitude to the customers who have chosen Toyota cars, and to those who have built each car with heart and soul, as well as to the suppliers and dealers who have delivered them with care, and to all our other stakeholders,” said Toyota President Koji Sato.
Locally, Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) remains the leading car company, with the Vios as its best-selling model. The subcompact sedan and the previous-gen Innova are both produced locally at the Santa Rosa plant in Laguna. By 2024, the next-gen Tamaraw is expected to join the production lines.
