Toyota unveiled the FT-Se Concept at this year's Japan Mobility Show and it serves as a preview of the brand's vision of next-generation sports cars powered by an all-electric powertrain.

Looking at the concept in person, the low-slung, compact silhouette of the concept gives off a proper sports car look. It is emphasized by an orange exterior color contrasted by a black roof. The daytime running lights (DRLs) also add more character to the finish. The two-tone scheme is also integrated into the rear end, which resembles a McLaren 720s.
The wheels get a star-like pattern complemented by red brake calipers that exude sportiness. Also found on the wheel is the GR (Gazoo Racing) badge. If this concept becomes a production model, it will become the performance division's first electric vehicle (EV) model.
A preview of Toyota's future electric sports cars
The GR sports car lineup currently consists of the GR86 and GR Yaris. Meanwhile, the Japanese automaker only has one EV model with the bZ4X. The production version of the FT-Se concept would become an addition to the two said portfolios. But as of this writing, there is no word regarding plans for production.
Rumors also suggest the FT-Se concept is a revival of the Toyota MR2 nameplate - which was a two-seater, rear-wheel-drive (RWD) sports car the automaker produced in the 80s. If so, the concept could feature the same configurations albeit an all-wheel-drive (AWD) option shouldn't be ruled out for this EV.
This could be Gazoo Racing's first EV
No technical specifications were shared with us at the auto show. GR also doesn't have an electrified model yet so we can't tell what could power this concept. Note, however, that Toyota is currently working on solid-state batteries which promise to deliver 1,000 km of range and 10 minutes of charging time. That sounds impressive, but these batteries aren’t likely to come out for the next couple of years.
For now, we get to enjoy the contemporary sports car look along with other concepts at Toyota's booth at Tokyo Big Sight including its crossover concept sibling, the FT-3e.
