Since the introduction of the Toyota Land Cruiser, the nameplate is long known as a rugged off-road SUV with big combustion engines. Now, it seems the Japanese automaker is flipping the script with the preview of an all-electric concept of the SUV called the Land Cruiser Se.
Toyota Land Cruiser Se concept
With an electric vehicle (EV) powertrain, the Cruiser Se will run smoother and quieter on the road. The concept is also underpinned by a unibody chassis as opposed to the staple body-on-frame of the nameplate. Regardless, the Japanese automaker assures “highly responsive handling and confidence in tackling rough terrain.”
Dimensions-wise, the concept spans 5,150mm in length, 1,990mm in width, and 1,705mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,050mm. That makes it about the same length and width as the current-gen Land Cruiser 300 but is only lower by 240mm.
The nameplate goes electric
The EV concept arrives with a modern crossover-like appeal, which is a departure from the boxy body of the road-going Land Cruiser. Inside, the vehicle features a seven-seater layout. Toyota promises the EV powertrain will help “create a comfortable cabin space when driving in urban areas and other on-road situations.”
Speaking of which, Toyota hasn’t released the details about the concept’s EV powertrain. The automaker is working on mass-producing new solid-state batteries by 2027. If the concept gets this technology, it would offer 1,000 km of range and a 10-minute charging time.
This EV concept is coming to the Japan Mobility Show
Toyota is expected to reveal the full specs at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show (formerly known as the Tokyo Auto Show) along with other interesting EV concepts such as the highly customizable Kayoibako. No production plans have been set for this concept but we’re hoping it would be an addition to the range instead of fully electrifying the renowned nameplate.
The JMS is happening from October 25 to November 4 at the Tokyo Big Sight in Japan.
