It features a familiar silhouette but with futuristic styling.

Toyota will be unveiling an all-electric version of the HiAce – at least as a concept for now. The electric HiAce concept is set to be unveiled at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show (formerly known as Tokyo Auto Show) later this month.

From the initial photos, the vehicle still looks a lot like the HiAce, not the Commuter edition with the flat nose, but with futuristic styling. That’s because the concept is based on the current generation of the nameplate. It gets slimmer headlights, neon green trims on the front bumper, and a revamped taillight design.

The exterior also features black accents on the fenders, wheels, rocker panels, and even the roof. It also has a black wraparound decal with the “Global HiAce” and “Toyota” scripts. All of which add character to the people hauler.

The van boasts a very spacious cargo room

Inside, we can see that the electric concept only gets a one-seater layout, which frees up a lot of space for the cargo area. The interior does have modern amenities such as an infotainment screen system. The cargo room is said to be 3,500 mm – about as long as a Suzuki S-Presso.

We aren’t sure of the powertrain details but we know it runs on electric. If Toyota makes this a production-ready model, it will join other van EVs such as the Ford Transit.

In our previous report, the Toyota HiAce could go electric by 2025. It is rumored to use the same e-TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture) platform that underpins models like the Toyota bZ4X and Lexus RZ 450e.

Toyota will reveal more details about the HiAce concept at the said auto show happening from October 25 to November 8 (doors open to the public on October 27) at the Tokyo Big Sight in Japan. It will be part of the brand’s workhorse EV concept portfolio consisting of the Hilux Revo BEV (battery electric vehicle) and Tamaraw.
